Jamaica, NY - The SJC men's basketball team
exploded for 42 second-half points to earn a 71-69 road win over
York College. Sophomore Elbie Murphy (Loudonville,
NY) led the Monks with 26 points and 5 steals. With the win, St.
Joe's improves to 7-4 overall.
After a hard-fought first half, the Monks found themselves down
36-29 at the break, but Murphy and senior Marcus
Alexander (Niceville, FL) kept St. Joe's within striking
distance.
The Cardinals (7-5) held a 6-point lead with 12 minutes to go, but
St. Joe's used a 7-0 run that was sparked by a three-pointer by
sophomore R.J. Mattison (Hamden, CT) to close the
gap and take a slim 1-point advantage. York regained the lead
briefly, 51-49 on a three by Jeffrey Boone, but Mattison drilled
another three to put the Monks up for good.
The teams battled right up until the buzzer and a dunk by Murphy
with thirty five seconds to go helped secure the SJC victory.
