NORTHFIELD, VT - The Saint Joseph's College men's basketball
team faced off against GNAC foe Norwich University on Tuesday
evening and won, in overtime, 86-82. The game was tied 67-67 at the
end of regulation, but the Monks took control in the overtime
period as they outscored the Cadets 19-15 to secure the victory.
St. Joe's junior forward Elbie
Murphy (Loudonville) led all scorers with 30
points in the game. The Monks even up their overall record at 4-4
with the win and improve to 2-1 in GNAC play. Norwich falls to 4-5
on the season and 0-3 in GNAC competition.
Early in the game, the Monks trailed 3-0 as JR Tim Fico (Monroe,
CT) hit a three-pointer on the Cadets' first possession. St. Joe's
fired back with a 17-3 run highlighted by SO
Alberto Rue's (Jamaica Plain, MA)
7 points during the six minute span. St. Joe's maintained the lead
most of the game and were up by as much as 14 points after SO
Ray Eatmon (Huntington, NY) grabbed a steal and
scored a layup two minutes into the second half to make the score
38-24.
The Cadets refused to accept defeat easily as they rallied to score
15 unanswered points to take the lead with 7:53 left in regulation.
Norwich guard Jerrold Williams (Norwalk, CT) scored nine of his
team high 21 points during the run to help his team go ahead,
58-55.
The game was a back and forth affair until the Monks tied the game
at 67 apiece after Eatmon scored on a layup with 2:13 remaining in
the game.
The excitement continued in overtime as the Norwich shooters hit
several key three pointers to keep the game within striking
distance for the Cadets. St. Joe's held on as
Elbie Murphy scored seven of his
game high 30 points in overtime to help propel the Monks to the
86-82 victory. Ray Eatmon also
played well in OT, scoring 6 points in the bonus frame.
Besides his game high 30 points, Elbie
Murphy grabbed an incredible six steals in the
game. Ray Eatmon attained his
third consecutive double-double as he scored a season high 22
points and pulled down 14 rebounds in the game.
Eatmon made 11-15 field goal attempts in the
contest. Alberto Rue scored 14
points, his season best, and made 2-3 three-point attempts in the
game. JR Scot Vachon
(Schenectady, NY) dished out 7 assists and grabbed 6 rebounds in
the Monks victory.
For the Cadets, Jerrold Williams netted 21 points and Jamel Bedford
scored 20 points.
Saint Joseph's College hosts GNAC opponent Albertus Magnus College
on Thursday, 1/10 at 7:30 PM.
