WATERVILLE, Maine – Colby College (4-0) defeated Saint Joseph's College (2-2), 96-80, in NCAA DIII men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Mules opened the contest by scoring 14 unanswered points with senior Wallace Tucker (Atlanta, Ga.) netting nine in the first four minutes of play. The Monks responded over the following four minutes with a 12-7 run to cut their deficit down to 21-12 as junior guard Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) connected for seven points during the surge.
Colby shot 50% (12-24) from three-point distance in the first half and held a 53-39 lead going into intermission.
Saint Joseph's managed to cut the deficit down to nine points (61-52) when junior guard Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) made a layup with 14:00 minutes on the clock, but Colby mounted a 27-9 run spanning seven minutes to claim a game-high 27-point (88-61) cushion, effectively putting the contest out of reach.
STATS OF THE GAME:
The Mules made 20-of-45 attempts from three-point land while the Monks converted 8-of-20 from beyond the arc…Colby held a 36-19 lead in bench points.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Foley scored a career-high 29 points with six rebounds
- Curtis added 22 points, three boards, and three assists
- Senior forward Patrick Kelly (Charlestown, Mass.) grabbed a career-best 13 rebounds and added four points and four assists
- Sophomore forward Ashtyn Abbott (Farmingdale, Maine) chipped in with six points
LEADERS – COLBY:
- Tucker paced the Mules with 23 points and added three assists
- Sophomore guard Alec McGovern (Colchester, Conn.) tallied 20 points, four rebounds, and two blocked shots
- Freshman guard Henry Westrich (Glenburn, Maine) was 6-for-8 from the field with 16 points and a pair of steals
- Sophomore guard Cooper Wirkala (Spruce Head, Maine) tallied six points, seven rebounds, and four assists
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 4-9 all-time versus Colby College.
