Curtis Breaks SJC Career Three-Pointer Record in GNAC Victory

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (13-11, 9-7 GNAC) defeated Regis College (13-11, 9-8 GNAC), 68-58, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

MILESTONE MET:

With a three-pointer at the 18:38 mark of the second half, graduate student guard Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) broke the Monks' career three-pointers made record, which was previously held by Stephen Chase '93, who connected for 311 trifectas in 119 games.

Curtis entered tonight's contest with 309 treys to his credit and has now converted 312 shots from downtown in 110 career games. Chase, a 2015 SJC Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, shot 37.2% (311-835) from deep during his career while Curtis sports a 40.9% (312-763) career three-point shooting percentage.

Sophomore guard Teagan Hynes (York, Maine) was credited with the assist on the record-breaking three, which was hit from the baseline on the left side of the court.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The GNAC foes swapped the lead twice and played through three tie scores early in the first half, but the Monks closed out the opening frame with a 10-1 run to secure a 35-31 advantage heading into intermission.

The hosts posted their first double-digit lead of the night when sophomore guard Julian Llopiz (Boston, Mass.) made a three-pointer to make it a 47-37 game with 11:07 left. After netting eight unanswered points – including five from Hynes – in a matter of two minutes, the Monks held a game-high 15-point (57-42) cushion with 7:07 on the clock.

Saint Joseph's proceeded to lead by at least 10 points for all but one Regis possession down the stretch and held off the Pride due in part to a 4-for-5 effort from the free throw line in the closing 46 seconds.
