ATTITUDE REFLECTS LEADERSHIP:

Saint Joseph's: Tyler Ackley – 2nd season (24-29, .452)

Tyler Ackley was named as the fifth head coach in the history of the Monks Men's Basketball program in September 2021. After overseeing the Royal Blue to a 9-18 overall record – and a 2-9 mark in home games – last season, Coach Ackley has led the Monks to their first over-.500 record since 2019 and a much-improved 10-2 mark at the Harold Alfond Center.

Ackley comes to Saint Joseph's from Colby College, where he served as The John "Swisher" Mitchell Assistant Coach for four years and, in 2020, helped lead the Mules to their first-ever NESCAC Championship game appearance, as well as their first NCAA Tournament berth in 23 years.

Prior to his time at Colby, Coach Ackley was a three-year assistant coach at Nebraska Wesleyan University, where he recruited and coached seven players who combined to earn 14 all-conference honors, including a Jostens Award winner, three D3hoops.com All-Americans and the Conference's Most Valuable Player and NCAA Division III Final Four MVP.

University of Saint Joseph: Glen Miller (19th Season, 2nd as Head Coach at USJ; 282-211, .572)

Glen Miller – former Associate Head Men's Basketball Coach at the University of Connecticut – is in his first season as Head Coach at USJ in 2021-22 after three seasons as full-time Associate Head Coach.

In his first season as the Blue Jays' clipboard carrier in 2021-22, Miller guided USJ to a 26-2 record and the program's second-consecutive GNAC Championship. He was selected as the 2022 GNAC Coach of the Year for his efforts.

Joining the Saint Joseph staff in October 2017, Miller began working immediately alongside hall of famer Jim Calhoun on building USJ's first-ever men's basketball program, a program that reached the 2019 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship with an all-freshman starting five. They followed it up with their first GNAC Title in 2020, and played in the NCAA Div. III Tournament in Springfield, Mass.

Miller brings an extensive and highly successful coaching background to the Blue Jays. He spent 14 years on staff at the University of Connecticut, including the previous seven since returning to UConn in 2010-11, after head coaching stints at Connecticut College, Brown University, and the University of Pennsylvania.

THE LAST TIME WE MET (USJ 100, SJC 73, West Hartford, 1/14/23):

The Monks faced a five-point (37-32) deficit at halftime and trailed 65-61 after senior forward Ashtyn Abbott (Farmingdale, Maine) hit a jump shot with 10:06 left in the second stanza. The wheels quickly fell off however, as the Blue Jays netted 14 unanswered points in just over two minutes.

The USJ outburst, which gave the hosts a 79-61 cushion with 7:53 remaining, proved to be part of a larger dominant stretch as the Blue Jays outscored the Monks by a 35-12 margin in the closing 10 minutes of play.

University of Saint Joseph used the long ball to put Saint Joseph's away as the hosts made 9-of-17 attempts from downtown in the second half alone. The Blue Jays also held advantages in points off turnovers (24-13), second chance points (25-4), and points in the paint (50-30) on the afternoon.

Freshman guard John Paul Frazier (York, Maine) scored a season-high 21 points on 6-for-8 shooting from three-point distance with six rebounds. For the Blue Jays, Ryan O'Neill poured in 34 points with eight rebounds and two steals.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is 1-5 all-time versus University of Saint Joseph and has fallen to the Blue Jays in five-consecutive meetings.

GNAC TOURNAMENT HISTORY:

The Monks have never missed the GNAC Tournament in 15 seasons as a member of the conference and have won at least one postseason contest in 10 of the last 12 trips. Saint Joseph's is 13-12 in GNAC tourney play with a GNAC Championship in 2009 and appearances in the title game in 2011 and 2014.

University of Saint Joseph has played in each of the last three GNAC Championship games, as the Blue Jays fell to Albertus Magnus in 2019 and claimed their first conference crown with an 88-84 title bout triumph over the Falcons in 2020. USJ toppled Albertus, 94-67, in the 2022 GNAC Championship.

Friday's tourney matchup marks the third time the Blue Jays and Monks have met in the conference tournament. USJ edged SJC in a 2019 semifinal, 91-86, in Standish and cruised past the Monks to the tune of a 95-45 score in a quarterfinal in West Hartford last February.
