STANDISH, Maine – Weekly accolades have been announced and Saint Joseph's College freshman guard Remijo Wani (Portland, Maine) has been named as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and Maine Men's Basketball Coaches & Writers Association (MMBCWA) Rookie of the Week.
In addition to honors, the MMBCWA releases a coaches poll every week, and the Monks are ranked second in the State of Maine with 29 points. Husson University is the top team with 35 points and all seven first-place votes while UMaine-Farmington is third (24 pts), Southern Maine is fourth (21 pts), and Colby College is fifth (11 pts).
Wani put up a double-double for the Monks in a blowout victory over Dean on Saturday with 19 points on 8-for-12 shooting while notching 15 rebounds and four assists for Saint Joseph's. The first-year averaged 12 points, nine boards, and three assists in an undefeated week.
In 25 games this season, Wani is averaging 10.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.1 steals and shooting 41.7% (101-242) from the field, 29.4% (30-102) from three-point range, and 69.4% (34-49) from the free throw line. He is tied for the team lead in rebounding and ranks third on the team in scoring average, assists average, three-pointers made (30), and total points (266).
The freshman standout has now earned three weekly top rookie honors from both the GNAC and MMBCWA this winter.
The #3 seed in the GNAC Tournament, Saint Joseph's (16-9, 12-2 GNAC) will host #6 Emmanuel College (12-13, 8-6 GNAC) in quarterfinal action on Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
