NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Nine different players scored to help Saint Joseph's College (5-6, 3-1 GNAC) defeat Albertus Magnus College (7-3, 1-3 GNAC), 23-9, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse contest on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks shot out of the gates with eight unanswered goals, as senior Max Lacy (Salisbury, N.H.) hit pay dirt three times to give the visitors an 8-0 lead with 13:05 left in the second quarter.
Rocco Albanese and Bailey Kirwin followed with goals for the Falcons to make it an 8-2 game, but Saint Joseph's went on to net six of the next eight goals to provide the visitors with a 14-4 cushion at intermission.
St. Joe's kicked off the third quarter with six unanswered tallies, a surge capped by two Tiger Hopkins (Leeds, Maine) goals, to secure a 20-4 advantage with 2:42 left in the third period.
All 36 of the Monks' healthy players saw time in today's victory.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's set new team single-game records for shots (82) and shots on goal (53) in today's triumph while picking up 59 ground balls and forcing 19 turnovers. Albertus Magnus tallied 38 shots, 18 shots on goal, 43 ground balls, and 11 caused turnovers. The Monks held a 19-17 edge in face-off victories on the afternoon.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC senior Brannon Gilbert (Gray, Maine) made eight saves in 40:57 between the pipes to pick up the victory to improve to 5-3 on the season. Sophomores Liam Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) allowed four goals in 12:32 minutes and second-year Scott Walsh (Brookline, N.H.) posted one save in the closing 6:31 of play.
Albertus netminder Dane Walsh was very good in the setback and made 30 saves in a losing bid.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Hopkins scored six goals with three assists
- Lacy scored on all six of his shots and added an assist – with his final goal of the afternoon he registered the 100th point of his collegiate career
- Senior Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) netted five goals on seven shots
- Junior Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) added a goal, three assists, and three ground balls
- Sophomore Tyler Moscato (West Haven, Conn.) scored a goal with four ground balls
- Freshman Kevin Wood (Danvers, Mass.) picked up seven ground balls and three caused turnovers
- Sophomore Ryan Bogdanski (Southington, Conn.) notched six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
- Freshman Nick DeLeo (Saco, Maine) was 8-13 on face-off attempts and senior Ethan Richard (Litchfield, Maine) went 5-8 on the dot
LEADERS – ALBERTUS MAGNUS:
- Jon Olson scored four goals with an assist
- Matthew Hutchings netted two goals
- Derek Ralston was 17-34 on face-offs and picked up 12 ground balls with a pair of caused turnovers
- Matt Bouchard added seven ground balls and two caused turnovers
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
The Monks are now 8-0 all-time versus Albertus Magnus College.
