STANDISH, Maine –Saint Joseph's College (6-1-2, 5-0-0 GNAC) edged Johnson & Wales University (6-2-0, 3-2-0 GNAC), 1-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Controlling the pace of play and possession throughout the first half, the Monks netted the only goal of the game at the 29:10 mark when graduate student Colin Grant (Harvard, Mass.) scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season on a rebound off a shot from senior Austin Ward (North Andover, Mass.) that clanged off the right post.
The Wildcats applied plenty of pressure late in the second half and steered four of their five shots on goal in the final 12 minutes of the game, but SJC keeper David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) proved up to the task on all four occasions while also picking off a handful of jump balls in the box.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (12-7) while Johnson & Wales held the advantage in shots on goal (5-3) and corner kicks (5-2) on the afternoon.
THE KEEPERS:
Walbridge posted five saves in the shutout performance while JWU junior Jacob Friedman (Woodland Hills, Calif.) made a pair of stops for the visitors.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the result, Saint Joseph's improves to 12-8-1 in the history of the series with Johnson & Wales University and partially avenges the double-overtime 1-0 2019 GNAC Championship loss at the hands of the Wildcats.
NEXT!
Saint Joseph's will host Lasell University on Tuesday in a GNAC matchup slated to begin at 6:30 PM.
