STANDISH, Maine – The United Soccer Coaches All-Region honors have been announced and Saint Joseph's College graduate defender Colin Grant (Harvard, Mass.) has earned Region I Third Team accolades.
Grant, the 2021 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year, led the Monks in goals (10), points (26), and game-winning goals (5) during the 2021 campaign. The third-year starter and team captain led a back line that notched a conference-best 0.61 goals against average and held Norwich's Joseph Thongsythavong and USJ's DeAnte Anderson - a duo that netted 43 goals combined this fall – scoreless over four games, a total of over 375 minutes, versus the Cadets and Blue Jays.
Only one NCAA DIII Men's Soccer player listed as a defender - Husson sophomore Jordi Cabau Limens – netted more points than Grant this fall. A stalwart defender with excellent field vision and ball skills, Grant was the Monks' best all-around player this season and was a major force in the team's GNAC Championship run.
Grant joins Norwich's junior Joey Thongsythavong (Second Team) and senior Amerle Nemeye (Third Team) as one of just three GNAC players to be listed on United Soccer Coaches All-Region teams this fall.
Under the watch of third-year Head Coach Will Pike, the Monks posted a 16-2-2 overall record with a 12-0-0 mark in conference player en route to earning the top seed in the GNAC Tournament. The Monks defeated #8 Colby-Sawyer (3-0) and #5 University of Saint Joseph (3-1) to advance to the GNAC Championship game for the fifth-consecutive season. St. Joe's tipped #2 Norwich, 1-0 in double-overtime, in the league title bout on November 6th to earn the program's sixth GNAC crown.
With the GNAC's automatic qualifier into the 2021 NCAA DIII National Tournament, Saint Joseph's faced New York University in the opening round in a contest played at Connecticut College on November 13th. The Monks scored twice in the opening 18 minutes and held a 2-1 lead with 16 minutes left when the game was halted due to lightning. The decision was made to resume the game several hours later at Conn College's lighted turf field. NYU tied the game with just over a minute left and netted the winner with 39 seconds left in the first overtime to end the Monks' season.
