Monks Wing Blue Jays, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (6-3-1, 5-1-0 GNAC) toppled University of Saint Joseph (6-2-1, 3-1-1 GNAC), 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the opening minute, as sophomore Gracien Mukwa (Portland, Maine) netted his third marker of the season after picking up a loose ball dropped by USJ keeper Jose Miguel Garcia Martin (Madrid, Spain) and punching it home 37 seconds into the contest.

The SJC edge remained intact for exactly 50 minutes on the clock, as grad student Austin Ward (Exeter, N.H.) knocked in his team-leading fifth goal of the season off a Mukwa assist. Sprinting down the right sideline and turning the corner to face the goal near the end line, Mukwa set up the score with a perfect right-to-left crossing pass in the box.

Saint Joseph's tacked on an insurance goal at the 63:59 mark when grad student Michael Wildes (Winslow, Maine) drilled a header into the top right corner of the net off an Alex Kosinski (East Lyme, Conn.) free kick that bounced in the box.

The hotly-contested conference game featured eight cards – four for each team – and 30 total fouls.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (18-11), shots on goal (9-3), and corner kicks (4-2) in the decisive victory.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
