Late Dos Santos Strike Lifts Monks to Narrow GNAC Victory

NEWTON, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Rion Dos Santos (São Paulo, Brazil) scored in the 89th minute to lift Saint Joseph's College (10-3-1, 9-1-0 GNAC) past Lasell University (4-8-3, 2-5-3 GNAC), 2-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks claimed an early 1-0 lead when grad student Austin Ward (Exeter, N.H.) converted a penalty kick attempt in the first minute. The Lasers tied the game at the 32:12 mark when Daniel Faynstein potted his 11th goal of the year off quick passes from Ryan Klopchin and Jaydon Perez.

St. Joe's dominated in both possession and scoring opportunities for the remainder of the afternoon but did not find the back of the net until the 88:45 mark when Dos Santos connected with a shot to the lower right corner for the clincher.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (29-4), shots on goal (8-2), and corner kicks (10-0) in the triumph.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior goalie Mike Sheridan (Folsom, Pa.) made one save in the victory while Lasell netminder Gabrielus Bazikas posted six stops in the loss.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 8-10-0 all-time versus Lasell University and has now defeated the Lasers in six-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2016 season.

Saint Joseph's will host Rivier University on Wednesday in a GNAC match set for a 5:00 PM kick-off.
