Monks Shut Down Mariners in Regular Season Final, 2-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (11-3-3, 11-2-1 GNAC) blanked Mitchell College (2-11-3, 2-10-2 GNAC), 2-0, in what was the regular season finale for both programs on Tuesday afternoon.

PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS:

Saint Joseph's has earned the top seed in the GNAC Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons and will host the winner of Thursday's #9 Emmanuel / #8 Regis play-in game on Saturday at 1:00 PM.

For Mitchell College, a first-year member of the GNAC, the loss signals the end of the 2023 campaign.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks kicked off the scoring in the 21st minute when junior Nate Sottak (Belmont, N.H.) knocked in a Rion Dos Santos (São Paulo, Brazil) free kick with a header into the top right corner.

The 1-0 edge held true until the 59th minute when Dos Santos connected for his team-leading sixth goal of the 2023 season.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's maintained the lead in shots (32-10), shots on goal (18-2), and corner kicks (6-2) in the triumph.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Liam Foley (Middleton, Mass.) posted a pair of saves in a shutout effort while Mitchell netminder Jesse Jenkins registered 16 stops in a losing effort.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 3-2 in the history of the series with Mitchell College. These two teams last met in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament when the Monks tipped the Mariners by a 2-1 score at Tufts University.
