STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (26-10, 18-6 GNAC) easily handled
Albertus Magnus College (0-24, 0-22), 11-0 and 15-4, in the team's
final conference doubleheader of the season.
Madylan Kluna '12 (Standish, ME)
sat down all 15 hitters she faced, with eight strikeouts, in a
five-inning perfect game effort in the opener and is now 8-5 in her
rookie season. Michelle Prevost
'12 (Topsham, ME) improved to 2-0 with the nightcap win.
Emily Leverone '11 (Hampton, NH)
was 4-5 with three runs and five RBI on the day and, with 68 hits
through 36 games, broke the program's single-season hit record,
formerly held by Kellie Glantz '97. With the
sweep, the Lady Monks solidified their position as the #2 seed in
the upcoming GNAC tournament.
Saint Joseph's used a 10-run third inning to roll to an 11-0
victory in the opener. Liddy van der Linden '10
(Worcester, MA) hit her first home run of the season, a two-run
blast, during the offensive barrage that featured seven SJC hits
and four errors by the Falcons.
Leverone went 2-3 with three RBI and two runs
scored and Kluna was 2-2 with a double, a run and an RBI in her
first collegiate plate appearances. Leverone's
record-breaking hit was a triple to left-center in the first frame.
van der Linden was 2-2 and Liz
Jordan '09 (Sandwich, MA) knocked in a pair and
scored twice in the blowout win.
The Lady Monks put up crooked numbers in each of the first three
innings to leave little hope for the Falcons.
Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME)
tripled home a pair of runs in the first inning and belted a double
in the second to plate two SJC runs. Leverone also
knocked two home with a two-bagger in the five-run second frame,
which saw the hosts take a 9-0 lead.
Albertus Magnus scored three runs in the top of the third, but
Saint Joseph's regained the mercy-rule cushion in the bottom of the
inning with six runs on four hits and four AMC miscues.
Kiera Walsh '11 (Benton, ME), in
her first plate appearance of the season, narrowly missed a home
run and settled for an RBI double during the offensive surge.
Geel plated four runs with a double and a triple
in the triumph and Alysn Ludwig
'09 (Waldoboro, ME), Leverone and
Christy Wezowicz '10 (Granville,
MA) each registered two hits. Prevost fanned two
and allowed a pair of earned runs and five hits in four innings and
Ludwig finished the game with a scoreless inning
of work with one punch out.
St. Joe's heads into the GNAC playoffs having won eight consecutive
games by a combined score of 76-5. The weekend was a
record-breaking one, individually, for a pair of Lady Monks.
Ludwig broke the career stolen bases record on
Saturday and, with 135 career runs, is closing in on the program
record of 139, held by Cindy Kamszik '96.
Leverone continues to pulverize opposing pitching
staffs and is on pace to shatter the single-season record for
hitting, which is .515 and held by Julie MacMichael
'93. Through this weekend's contests, the sophomore is
hitting .586 with 68 hits, 17 doubles and seven home runs, which
all qualify as single-season records for the SJC softball
program.
Saint Joseph's will next play on Friday when the team hosts a GNAC
quarterfinal contest, opponent and starting time TBD.
