PLANT CITY, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (1-3) suffered a pair of mercy-rule setbacks in the Sunkissed Games on Monday afternoon. The Monks fell to Emerson College (1-0), 11-0, in the opener and fell to Ohio-Northern (2-0), 8-0, in the nightcap.
EMERSON 11, SAINT JOSEPH'S 0:
In the loss to Emerson, Saint Joseph's had trouble getting the offense going with just one baserunner advancing past second base and three hits total in the defeat.
The Monks' best opportunity to get on the board came in the bottom of the second, when junior third baseman Kaylee Burns (Saco, Maine) led off with a double and moved up to third when the following batter, junior Maizie Lee (Saco, Maine) singled through the left side. Emerson starting pitcher Neely Eddleston nullified the scoring chance by sitting down the next three SJC batters, including the last two of the frame by strikeout.
Junior Caitlin King (Old Town, Maine) took the loss in the circle and falls to 0-2 on the season after allowing nine runs off 10 hits and four walks with a pair of punch-outs in 4.1 innings. Junior Madisyn Charest (Sidney, Maine) made her collegiate debut in the circle and gave up two runs off two hits and two walks in 0.2 frames of relief.
Eddleston earned the victory after yielding two hits with three K's over four shutout innings. Marisca DeFranco, who was 4-4 with a run and an RBI, and Kallista Leonardos, who went 3-3 with two runs, a homer, and two RBI, paced the Lions' offensive attack.
OHIO NORTHERN 8, SAINT JOSEPH'S 0:
The Monks' offensive woes continued in the closing contest, as the Royal Blue registered a pair of hits with singles in each of the first two innings before being no-hit in the final three frames.
Ohio-Northern recorded just one extra-base hit – a double in the bottom of the fifth – with nine singles in the triumph as junior Kate Whitney (Jonesboro, Maine) takes the loss and falls to 1-1 after yielding eight runs (six earned) off 10 hits and a walk with two strikeouts over four-plus innings.
For Ohio-Northern, Madison Anderson earned the win in the circle after tossing five two-hit innings with a walk and a pair of K's and first baseman Brady Guest led the offensive attack by going 2-3 with a run and a pair of RBI.
