Saint Joseph's Falls to Wittenberg, 6-1

LEESBURG, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (1-2) suffered a pair of setbacks in The Spring Games at the Sleepy Hollow Complex on Monday. The Monks fell to Wittenberg University (2-0) in the opener, 6-1, and lost to Nebraska Wesleyan (3-1), 9-1 in six innings, in the nightcap.

GAME ONE:

The Monks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when junior Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) tripled to right and scored on a single from senior Bailey Rassol (Rehoboth, Mass.).

The Tigers quickly tied the game with a run off two hits in the top of the second and took the lead for good with three runs off four hits in the third, when freshman Diana Quevedo roped a two-run double to lift her team to a 4-1 advantage.

Wittenberg tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth, as sophomore Alexis Christy and Julia Burch delivered RBI singles to make it a 6-1 game.

IN THE CIRCLE:

  • SJC junior starter Sydney Hatch (Newburgh, Maine) took the loss after allowing four runs off seven hits over five innings
  • Freshman Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, Mass.) yielded two runs off three hits with one strikeout in an inning of relief
  • First-year Emma Hodgkins (Raymond, N.H.) allowed three hits in a scoreless seventh inning
  • Wittenberg starter Samantha Zungri went the distance and picked up the victory after giving up one run on seven hits with seven K's over seven frames

OFF THE BAT:

  • Rassol went 1-for-3 with an RBI

GAME TWO:

Unfortunately for the Monks, they failed to produce additional offense while Nebraska Wesleyan tied the game in the second, put a seven spot on the board in the third, and added another in the sixth to secure the mercy-rule victory.

  • Junior starter Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) took the loss after giving up eight runs (seven earned) on six hits over 2.2 innings
  • Junior Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless relief and Hodgkins yielded a run off three hits in 1/3 inning of work
  • Nebraska Wesleyan starter Ford earned the win after allowing a run on five hits with five punch-outs in six innings

OFF THE BAT:

  • Emery was the Monks' lone repeat hitter after going 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base
