THE LEAD – A four-run fourth powered Saint Joseph's College (ME) past Simmons University, 5-3, Saturday evening in the 2022 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Softball tournament at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing 2-0, the Monks batted around in the fourth and plated four runs on three hits to take control of the action at 4-2. Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine) got SJM on the board with an RBI single before Emily Jefferds (Scarborough, Maine) drew a bases loaded walk to even the score at 2-2. Ashley Emery (Madison, Maine) gave Saint Joseph's the lead for good with an RBI fielder's choice before Rebecca Flemming (Belmont, N.H.) drove in the final run of the frame on another fielder's choice to account for the 4-2 score.
  • The Monks added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single to center by Foley to bump the lead to 5-2.
  • Simmons battled until the end as Jordyn Rubin (Lewiston, Maine) made it a two-run game with an RBI double to left center to cut the lead to 5-3. With the tying run at the plate, the Monks were able to escape the jam preserve their second win of the day and advance to GNAC Championship Sunday.
  • The Sharks got on the board first to take a 1-0 lead in the first on an unearned run and then doubled their lead to 2-0 in the third on an RBI single to left by graduate student Christie Bott (Seaford, N.Y.) to account for the early 2-0 advantage.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • SJM Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) worked four innings of relief to earn the win, scattering four hits and giving up just the one run while striking out two to improve to 6-3 on the year. She relieved Sydney Hatch (Newburgh, Maine) who pitched the first three innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.
  • Simmons senior Maddie Castigliego (Bristol, R.I.) suffered the loss, surrendering five runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out four.
  • Foley finished the game going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored while Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) added two hits and run in the win.
  • Allie Mulhern (Westford, Mass.) was the lone Shark to collect multiple hits on the game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored.
  • The Monks had short a short memory to avenge Thursday's 6-0 loss the Sharks, a game in which Castigliego was perfect into the sixth inning and only surrendered one hit in the complete-game shutout.

UP NEXT

  • Saint Joseph's lives to see another day and will take on #1N Emmanuel College tomorrow morning (Sunday, May 8) at 10:00 AM in the elimination bracket finale. The winner will advance to the GNAC Championship series against Johnson & Wales University at 12:30 PM and will need a pair of wins to knock off the Wildcats for the GNAC crown.
  • Simmons wraps the 2022 campaign with an overall record of 26-13-1.

THE LEAD: Saint Joseph's College posted a 5-3 victory over Albertus Magnus College Saturday morning the first elimination game of the 2022 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Softball tournament at Roberto Clemente Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED   

  • The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third as Madison LaBossiere (Griswold, Conn.) tripled to right-center field and came around to score on a throwing error on the play. 
  • The Monks answered in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI single to center by Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) to even the score at 1-1 and the jumped ahead in the fourth as Taylor Owen (Wakefield, Mass.) connected on an RBI single to left to make it 2-1. 
  • Albertus tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth on an RBI groundout  by LaBossiere but once again Saint Joseph's immediately responded with a three-run bottom half of the inning to build a 5-2 advantage. Bailey Rassol (Rehoboth, Mass.) got the hit party started with an RBI single up the middle to move the score to 3-2. Lydnia Goonough (Kennebunkport, Maine) doubled to right-center to drive in Rassol and bump the lead to 4-2 before Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, Mass.) singled to left to plate Goodnough and account for the 5-2 cushion. 
  • Jess Stettinger (East Haven, Conn.) got one back for the Falcons in the sixth on a solo blast to left but the AMC bats were not able to mount a comeback as SJM held on for the 5-3 win to advance in the tourney field.  
     
    INSIDE THE NUMBERS  
  • Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) earned the win in the circle throwing 7.0 innings, allowing the three runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out six to improve to 10-7 on the year. 
  • Erin Dighelio (Wallingford, Conn.) (15-5) suffered the loss surrendering the five runs on 11 hits over 6.0 innings of work. 
  • Ashley Emery (Madison, Maine), Howe, Goodnough and Connery all ended the game with two hits apiece for the Monks. 
  • Pence held the GNAC's leading batter Ivy Geloso (Beacon Falls, Conn.) hitless for just the second time since April (minimum three at-bats). 

UP NEXT 

  • SJM advances in the tournament field and will play again later today at 5:00 PM against the winner of the #2N Simmons University vs. #3S University of Saint Joseph's (CT) elimination game taking place today at 12:00 PM. 
  • The Falcons wrap the 2022 campaign with an overall record of 29-11.
