3/12/22 - SJC Alpine Caps Historic Season at USCSA National Championships

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The Saint Joseph's College alpine ski teams concluded the 2022 season by competing in the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Dual Slalom National Championships at Whiteface Mountain on Friday. The men's and women's teams both advanced to the eight-team quarterfinal round.

In an event unique to the USCSA National Championships, teams face off against each other in a bracket format with five individuals from each squad racing head-to-head on parallel panel slalom courses. The first team in the matchup to win three individual races advances to the subsequent round by virtue of place point scores.

On the men's side, Saint Joseph's moved past the first round with a win over United States Military Academy after all four SJC athletes – Liam Strobeck (Charlotte, Vt.), Caleb Gorton (Goffstown, N.H.), Aidan Wolfinger (Bedford, N.H.), and Jacob Morris (North Woodstock, N.H.) – won their individual races. The Monks advanced to the quarterfinals after Babson forfeited the second round, but the thrilling day came to an end with a setback at the hands of Cornell University.

On the women's side, St. Joe's opened with an exciting win over Clarkson University, as all five SJC skiers – Courtney Pingree (Marblehead, Mass.), Madelyn Zordan (New Hartford, Conn.), Erica Irvin (Windham, N.H.), Maeghan Perkins (Turner, Maine) and Sarah Hotchkiss (New Durham, N.H.) – posted victories over their Golden Knight competitors. The SJC women also advanced to the quarterfinal round after Babson forfeited but their run ended there as the Monks fell to College of Idaho.
