Final blog entry, January 5, 2011:

The alarm woke me from a deep sleep at 6:30 AM and I did not want to wake up. Finally, after the second or third time the snooze button went off, I was up and getting ready for the long day of travel back to Maine. We had to be down in the vans by 7:15 because we weren't sure what the traffic was going to be like and didn't want to miss our 10:30 flight. On the way to the airport we reminisced about some of the funny things that happened during the past couple days, while some tried to catch a quick nap.

The moment of truth came when the team started to put their luggage on the scale to be checked in for travel. The one who came closest was one pound under the weight limit (50 lbs), any guesses on who that was? It was sophomore Melanie Cloutier. As everyone else went through the line, their weights ranged from 30 to 46 pounds.

When we were about to board the plane some of us recognized a person standing behind us and we thought it was a movie star. I went up to Skyler and asked her if it was Derek from Step Brothers and she thought it was! We called Danyelle Shufelt over and had her ask him if he was in Step Brothers…when he said yes we all freaked out and asked for a quick picture since our plane was starting to board. We finally were able to check off seeing a movie star on our list of things to do in California! I still am laughing at the fact that it was Derek from Step Brothers because we are always quoting that movie.

The first flight was close to five hours long…I was so happy to see that the airline provided us with free movies, music, and games! I watched a movie first then passed out until we started our descent into Newark, NJ for our layover.  In NJ we all grabbed lunch/dinner with the little money we had left over from the trip and then relaxed for about an hour until our next flight to Portland.

I was so excited because the seat next to me for the final flight was empty so I wasn't cramped into the little area of the window seat. This plane was a lot smaller than the planes we had been flying on so some of the girls and coaches who didn't like flying were nervous at every noise they heard from the engine. This flight was nice and quick - about an hour and fifteen minutes. Just enough time for me to finish the last entry into the blog!

This trip has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I am so thankful for all the different activities that we were able to experience while out in California and I would love to go back there if I ever have the opportunity.

The following entry is for Tuesday:

Today is the last full day in California. We ended this amazing trip by spending the day at Universal Studios! I was excited to see what Universal was going to have because I knew it would be different than the one in Florida, which I had already visited. We woke up early in the morning at 8, headed to Von's Supermarket one more time and then we were off to battle the commuter traffic of LA to get to Universal Studios for its opening at 10. There was barely any traffic and we arrived with twenty minutes to spare before the opening so we took the opportunity for some group pictures and to see what rides we were going to do first.

When we got into the park we headed to the Simpsons ride first. I was in the ride with Danyelle Shufelt, Abby Young, Mackenzie Dufour, Skyler Makkinje, Kim Palumbo, Alyssa Grigware, and my brother Matt. We all screamed at parts and laughed at others during the ride, the one thing we weren't expecting was our picture to be taken! When we got outside we tried to find the picture but it wasn't working so we could only guess how ridiculous we looked. After that it was off to the next ride and so on and so on until we experienced all the rides and attractions!

During the middle of the day some of us went to the Animal Actors show and we got to meet lots of animals that have been in movies ranging from Hotel for Dogs, Evan Almighty to Along Came Polly. We got to meet and take photos with one of the dogs from Hotel for Dogs before the show started and he was so adorable and even looked right at the camera when his trainer said the word.

We then were able to take a tour of the movie sets that are on the Universal lot. We went on a King Kong 3d ride, earthquake ride, and almost got attacked by Albert Hitchcock. We saw the set for How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the big blue screen where they filmed movies like National Treasure and Pirates of the Caribbean 3. The last thing we saw was a show at Water World. It was a show that had lots of special effects, pyrotechnics, fighting, and the crowd got soaked! For some reason we decided to sit in the soak section and later regretted it when one of the cast members came up to us with a bucket of water and just flung the water everywhere.

For dinner we met up with Coach McDevitt's roommate from college, Randy (Freer), who lives out in California and is the president of Fox Sports Network. He took us to a place called the Pink Taco. It was a very cool place and a fun last dinner to have as a team in California. I'd say the popular item on the team was either the Pink Taco meal or quesadillas. The van ride back was filled with lots of laughs, thanks to the jokes coming from Skyler Makkinje! It definitely made the ride back seem a lot quicker than it usually took.

Once dinner was finished and we said our goodbyes to Randy we headed back to the hotel to pack. It was the one thing I wasn't looking forward to on this trip. Some of the girls were really nervous for tomorrow and having to put their luggage on the scale because they feared it may now be over the 50lbs weight limit. I managed to pack rather quickly and easily because I didn't buy a lot of clothes here so I was able to head to bed pretty early.

The following entry is for January 3:

Game-day and last day of basketball for the trip! We awoke and headed to Denny's once again for breakfast.  My table (which included Meg Daigle, Mel Cloutier and Allie Parent) all had the same meal. We were trying to save our meal money and got the cheapest meal that would give us the most food.

After eating our breakfast and getting our bags from the hotel we headed back to Claremont. While trying to find the Pomona gym we ended up driving past the gym where we played Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday. It was really cool to see that five schools were so close to each other in the town of Claremont. We drove past a construction site where Pomona College is building a parking garage that has a turf lacrosse field on top of it.

Game time was at two o'clock. We started off very poorly and were down by five at halftime. After halftime we came out a little stronger and managed to pull ahead and win by ten. After the game we got to hang out and talk with Rick again since he was so nice and came to cheer us on in our game. It was so great to see him!

Tonight we had our first team dinner. We went to a buffet place, which was perfect for this team since everyone likes different things and we could eat as much as we wanted. We had things like salad, mac and cheese, potatoes, and for the daring ones - tacos! Then for desert we had a variety of things like ice cream, frozen yogurt, or cheesecake.

For the first time on the trip we had downtime at night. Some of the team went to the mall once again for some last minute shopping. While the rest of us either went down stairs to get on the computer and upload pictures or just relaxed in our rooms until it came time for a big game of catch phrase. The catch phrase game got quite intense when Abby Young knocked Danyelle Shufelt on the head with the hand held game. It was a blast messing with the girls when they had the game in their hand as the time was running out. Lindsay Moore was the one who would get the most nervous while others would just get upset when it beeped. Casey Drake did a mixture of describing words and charades when she had the word seasick. She rocked back and forth and said 'oh I'm on a boat and I don't feel good.' I instantly picked up on what she was saying and yelled it out!

After playing for about almost two hours I headed back to my room to get ready for bed and Allie got her hair crimped by Danyelle before bed. Tomorrow is our last full day in California and I can't believe that our trip is almost over. We are going to Universal Studios for the day tomorrow, I hope the weather holds up and stays nice for us so that we can go on all the fun rides!

The following blog is for January 2:

Today started off pretty early for us with practice at 9-11 at the American Sports Center. Since we didn't have practice the day before this one was tough, but it went really well. Once we finished with practice we had the day to do whatever we wanted. After showering I headed to the mall for some lunch and shopping with Allie Parent and Mel Cloutier.

After spending some much-needed time shopping I headed back to the hotel to get some rest before heading to the Honda Center to see Rick! The freshmen have no idea who Rick is since he went back to the NHL before they had a chance to meet him. I also was very excited for the Ducks game because it was my first NHL experience! I was the first to admit that I didn't know much about hockey except that everyone got excited when goals were scored or fights happened on the ice and of course the Zamboni!

We arrived at the Honda Center and, after Coach Clark almost drove past the parking attendant, we headed into the arena. We were in section 423 up at the top but could see the whole ice rink. For the national anthem this amazing 10 year old sang! The game began and we all were looking towards the benches for Rick. My mom brought her binoculars so we passed them around when we found him on the bench! Sadly right before I got a chance to look he disappeared into the tunnel because one of his players got hurt. We were really hoping that he would be the one to run out onto the ice to help the player but he was already in the training room. The game was close and the Ducks goalie was amazing! There were 40 shots on goal against him and he stopped 39 of them! The Ducks pulled out the win 2-1 and everyone was celebrating as we headed down two floors to wait to see Rick.

While we were waiting to see Rick, Casey Drake and Danyelle Shufelt spotted a player from the Ducks team! They ran right over and when they got to him they realized he was their favorite from the game Cam Fowler. They got a picture and autograph from him and then he was off to try and get to his car before anyone else spotted him in the arena.

After all of the hockey players cleared out of the team area Rick came up stairs to see us! After a round of hugs, hellos, and introductions he led us downstairs for a tour of where he works! The locker room was amazing, and smelly. He showed us a framed poster of the Stanley Cup, which he signed back when he worked for them before coming to SJC. We saw the athletic training room, the x-ray room, doc's room, coaches' office, and even walked out of the tunnel into the Ducks bench! It was a once in a lifetime tour and I am so appreciative that Rick took the time out of his strenuous schedule to show us around. We didn't want to say good-bye to him but he surprised us by telling everyone he was coming to our game tomorrow!

After we left the Honda Center around 9 at night it was back to the hotel and time to relax and get rest for the game tomorrow. This day was on the top of my list as one of my most exciting days because the hockey game was so close, we got to see Rick again, and took a tour of the Ducks locker room.

The following blog entry is for January 1, 2011:

Today was a day full of sightseeing. We woke up to find out that we weren't going to have practice but instead we were going to travel to Santa Monica Beach, Beverly Hills, and Pasadena.

We started off by going to the Santa Monica Pier and Muscle Beach. Mackenzie Dufour showed up some of the guys lifting there by climbing the rope swing. We walked out all the way on the Santa Monica Pier where Kim Palumbo, Abby Young and Melanie Cloutier took turns holding a parrot that a guy had on the pier.  After spending about half an hour roaming we piled back into the vans and were off to Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive in hopes of seeing some famous people.

We did a great deal of sightseeing from the vans as coach made his way onto Rodeo Drive for us to see all the shops and cars that were on the street. In a matter of seconds we saw two Bentleys and multiple Range Rovers drive past us. After going past stores such as Gucci, Tiffany and Co., Juicy Couture etc…we headed towards the Beverly Hills sign for a photo opp!  This is where we found parking meters that didn't just accept coins, but also accepted credit cards! I couldn't believe that parking meters actually would have a slot for you to swipe your card but apparently in the west coast that's what people carry around instead of coins.

After getting the group photo in front of the sign Danyelle Shufelt and I ran toward the street to get pictures of the palm trees and gorgeous houses that surrounded the road. After the fun, first-time experience at Beverly Hills, it was time to head towards Pasadena to see the floats from the Rose Bowl Parade, which occurred earlier in the day.

The floats were amazing! I had watched some of the parade earlier in the morning in the hotel room, but up close the floats were incredible to look at. The fact that all of them are made of flowers and still look so gorgeous and detailed amazed me. The area where the floats could be seen was very crowded and difficult to maneuver around. Casey Drake, Allie Parent and I got separated from the group and wound up heading in the opposite direction. We found Neil wandering around in hopes of finding the SpongeBob float to send a picture to his daughter at home. When we finally reunited back with the whole group we were ready to head back to the hotel for some much needed rest after our jam-packed day!

After we got settled back into the hotel and grabbed a quick dinner some of us headed to the hot tub. It was nice to finally sit down and relax because all day we had been on go-mode. It was just nice to not rush around.

Tomorrow we get to see our old athletic trainer Rick, who is back in the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks.

This update is for December 31, 2010…

Game Day! Today we played against Claremont-Mudd-Scripts. The really interesting thing about this team was the fact that it actually is three schools combined into one athletic program. So during our trip here in California we are actually playing opponents from 5 different schools because the team we play against after today is Pomona-Pitzer, which is the combination of two schools: Pomona and Pitzer.

To start the day off we had a team breakfast at Denny's. Everyone seemed to go for the make-your-own grand slam for a meal. As we were all hanging out at our table waiting for food our assistant coach Michelle, who couldn't join us, sent me a picture of her little boy Brady wishing us good luck in our game! We couldn't believe how big it seemed he was getting and it only had been five days since seeing him last.  This was one of the first actual breakfast meals we have had on the trip so to the girls it was delicious and we savored every bite! It reminded us a lot of having brunch at school before a home game.

Once we got our stuff from the hotel it was time to hit the road because it was a good 45-minute drive to get to Claremont for our game. The ride had many gorgeous views that you could only imagine seeing in magazines. We saw the Honda Center from the freeway, which is where we are going to see our old athletic trainer Rick Burrill! He is now the athletic trainer for the Anaheim Ducks NHL team. We headed further north and into more valleys until we finally arrived at the college.

One o'clock came and it was time for the game. It was a tough game – we played well during certain points of the game, but also struggled at times. In the end we lost 72-50 but we were only down by 8 or 12 until the end. This game was a good learning point for us as a team to work on our communication on offense and defense. But at the end of the day we need to learn from it and move on to the next game or practice on our schedule.

It seemed like our fans evened out their fans since we had my family, Allie Parent's mom and her friend, along with a family originally from Maine that came to watch us play. It was quite funny because they originally came because Neil went to school with the woman and then I found out she is also related to a family I am close with from mine and Abby Young's hometown – Cumberland, Maine. She highly recommended we stop at an In 'n Out burger on our way back to the hotel. At first I was worried because I wasn't sure that it was going to be good but we all thought it was great and really cheap!

Since it was New Years Eve we all showered and got ready for our night festivities. As a team we headed to Downtown Disney to sightsee for a couple hours. It was lots of fun and the stores were really cute. I was with Mackenzie Dufour and Danyelle Shufelt for the most part and we ran into other team members as we roamed downtown. When we first arrived we saw the end of the firework show at Magic Kingdom. As we walked around we found a shop with 2011 glasses and we got a pair of them along with Lindsay Moore and Theresa Hendrix. We decided to leave Disney an hour before midnight. When midnight hit we were able to see the fireworks from Disney out our window! It was incredible! We also saw three or four other shows going off in surrounding areas.

After that I fell sound asleep to be well rested for what tomorrow may bring for different activities.

Saturday, January 1st, 2011 12:35 AM PST, 3:35 AM EST

The following blog is for December 30th - I'm running a little behind because we do so much during the day that I don't have a lot of downtime to write!

Today was another busy day and the weather was looking great again! We started our day off with practice at the American Sports Center, which is set up similar to the Howard sports in Maine but there were about 16 courts that could be basketball or volleyball courts. Alyssa Grigware provided everyone with a laugh during practice when she trip over the line and dove on the court penguin style. This was now the second day she trip over a line in practice and everyone including the coaches couldn't help but laugh.

After our two-hour practice we headed back to the hotel to shower and get ready for the beach! I was very excited and even contemplated jumping in the ocean when we got there but everyone seemed to think I was crazy. We headed to Newport Beach, rumored to be the area where Kobe Bryant lived, for our first experience at the Pacific Ocean. As we pulled up to the beach the waves were gigantic! As we went toward the water it got chillier and chillier, but I still wanted to say I put my feet in the Pacific Ocean so I went for it.

At first some of the girls ran right out but if you stayed in for a little bit it you realized it was the same temperature as the Atlantic Ocean would be in the beginning of the summer. As we walked away from the water two guys were taking a running start into the ocean and dove right in!

We got to wander around to the little shops around the beach for about an hour. Everyone split up and found some things either for themselves or people close to them. While walking we had lots of people ask us where we were from since we dressed in shorts and t-shirts while the residents there were bundled up like it was zero degrees out.

When we left the beach we headed back to the hotel for a good break until our next activity of the day. Some of the girls who love to shop went back to the mall across from our hotel, while others got together and watched the SJC men's team play Davidson. The hotel was nice enough to provide us with a TV to hook our laptops to for a bigger screen.  Although the men didn't win it was still really cool to see them playing at a division one school. Congrats to Bruno Cavallo who scored his first college points against Davidson!

We then headed to UC-Irvine to watch the Loyola Marymount men play against the UC-Irvine men. It was a great game! Loyola pulled out the win, which was who we were rooting for. During the game we also were getting updates about the UCONN vs. Stanford game and couldn't believe the upset that was occurring.

As we got back to the hotel everyone was ready for bed and to sleep in a little. Tomorrow is game day against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

December 30th, 11:15 PM West Coast Time, 2:15 AM East Coast Time:

We started day two in California with rain! But for the most part we were all still in shorts because it was so warm compared to the weather we left in Maine. We headed to a grocery store for breakfast before practice, which was scheduled for 10-12. We went back to Loyola-Marymount for the last time. After the strenuous practice we were all ready for a shower and some SHOPPING!

We headed across the street from our hotel to the shopping center called the Block at Orange. As we all split up into our little groups for shopping and I wandered with Allie Parent and Melanie Cloutier, but along the way we ran into everyone at different stores. The popular stores seemed to be Papaya and the Nike Factory Store. Newcomer Theresa Hendrix was wearing a whole new wardrobe from Nike while Casey Drake, Kim Palumbo and Abby Young wore new shirts from Papaya.

Around four o'clock we headed back to the hotel to get ready to go to the NBA game, the Clippers vs. the Jazz. We headed to the Staples Center in hopes of getting there and watching the teams warm up.  Amelia Lamb of course got stopped by security, she had her video camera and they wouldn't allow that to be brought into the arena. We sat in section 209 to the left of one of the hoops.  We arrived to the game before the doors were even opened and Allie Parent was almost shaking because she was so excited to see her favorite player, Ryan Gomes of the Clippers.

We attempted many times to get to the floor for close pictures but security was at the top of the stairs stopping our every attempt. Everyone was having a great time, for some it was their first experience at an NBA game.  Since it was Neil's birthday today we made every attempt to get his name on the big screen sending multiple texts saying Happy Birthday. Alyssa Grigware sent one text saying 'Neil my ankle hurts,' and we knew he'd know it was from us if he saw it.

During the breaks at the end of the first and third quarter the dunk team came out on to the court and gave us quite a spectacle of different dunks. Then the halftime show was three all-star dogs that performed various tricks with their owner. The Jazz ended up winning the game. On the way back Coach Clark did a great job not to lose the other van and we made it back to the hotel around 11:15.

By the time we were back at the hotel my room was ready to go to sleep, so we crawled into bed and watched whatever was on T.V. until I passed out. Tomorrow we are going to try and go to a beach so I'm crossing my fingers for no rain!

December 29, 2010 - 11:08 PM Pacific Coast Time, 2:08 AM East Coast Time:

Today was our first full day in California and it was filled with great team-bonding and unforgettable memories. It started off by catching up on sleep, aka waking up at nine instead of four in the morning.

From the night before we planned to meet at 11:00 AM to get lunch before heading out on our adventures for the day. We walked to the outdoor mall and found a Subway; one of coach's favorite places for us to eat it seems this season. While walking around we mapped out what stores we wanted to come back to tomorrow when we have time to relax around the hotel. The one store on the top of list: the Nike Factory Store.

Once we finished eating our lunch - with pigeons anxiously waiting for us to leave to search for any crumbs we left on the outside tables - we packed up the vans and headed to see some of the amazing beaches near Santa Monica and Venice Beach. While sightseeing in the van we saw some things that were culture shocks for people and to quote Casey Drake "it was awesome."

We started playing the 'yellow car' game, but Geel was too good and a lot of us in the van quit. When we finally reached Venice Beach we managed to get on the boardwalk for 0.2 seconds until a parking attendant told us that vans were not allowed.  When we found parking elsewhere we had about ten minutes for photo time on the beach. Venice beach is also known as "muscle beach" although we didn't see any body builders trust me the boy patrol, Danyelle Shufelt, was keeping an eye out.

Sadly, when the ten minutes was up it was back in the vans and off to Loyola Marymount again for practice, but this time we got to watch the men's team from Loyola practice before it was our time to start. While we watched them practice one of the coaches came up to us and started conversation and began talking about one of their players from Waterbury, CT and come to find out he knew(SJC men's basketball point guard) Julio Vazquez! What a small world as the coach said.

After two hours of practice it was time for more fun! We were off to a UCLA vs. LSU women's basketball game at UCLA. We learned on our drive to find the UCLA campus that people aren't very friendly in LA while driving, but not to worry Coach McDevitt always can use his coaching voice and tell them to follow the law and not text and drive.  After nearly blowing our tires in one van on the spike strip and almost not making into a parking garage because the height was too short we found the arena and headed in for the game just about five minutes late. UCLA was undefeated to start the game and ranked in the top ten, while LSU always is a contender for the NCAA championship but not ranked currently this year. The game was close the whole time right until the final buzzer, when LSU was able to pull off the upset and win by 2. It was lots of fun, the crowd was really into the game and we sat eight rows from the court!

When we got back to the hotel some of the girls were hungry so they set off to find some food. They came across a Wendy's. Unfortunately the dining room was closed so they decided to try and walk through the drive through…it worked! They came back to the hotel and couldn't stop laughing and still were shocked they just had done it. Well done Allie Parent, Danyelle Shufelt, Mackenzie Dufour, and Skyler Makkinje.

Tomorrow we get to go to a L.A. Clippers game! I hope that Allie Parent gets her wish and gets to see her favorite player Ryan Gomes again!

Tuesday, December 28th - 1:03 PM:

I would have written yesterday but the day was filled with craziness – it's a miracle that we got here to the west coast!

The day started at 4:00am when I woke up fearing for a message that we weren't leaving anymore because of the near white out conditions caused by the blizzard that was happening all over the north east. Instead everyone sleep walked to get ready to pile onto the bus and head to Boston (meaning another two hour nap for most of the girls since we only had about 4 hours of sleep the night before because we were waiting to see what was going to happen with our flight).

We waited and waited knowing that at 5:30 the bus was supposed to be in front of Scully (where we are staying over break) - instead the bus was at the entrance of campus because it hadn't been plowed and there was 6 to 8 inches of snow coving the campus roads! Neil, our athletic trainer who gets to join us on our amazing trip, used his 4-wheel drive to cut a path to Scully for the bus, coach McDevitt's car and Coach Clark's car. As we watched through the windows at Scully we only saw Neil and the bus drive by, we were all very confused. When we finally got on the bus we saw it was Rodney driving us and we knew we were in for a fun ride! The coaches' cars couldn't make it in the snow and we had to pick them up at the front of campus where they left their cars for security to move after the campus roads had been plowed. I managed to capture the moment with a picture! Once they got on the bus it was forward to Boston! From what I was told the driving was easier on the way to Boston than driving around campus earlier in the morning.

Arriving at Logan Airport with about an hour to get through security before our 10:05 flight-which was amazingly still scheduled to leave on time-we all were anxious to see if we really would leave since it was still pretty bad conditions outside. The team breezed through security (surprisingly, no one's checked bag was over the 50lbs, shockingly Neil's bag was the closest to the weight limit which amazed us that sophomore Mel Cloutier's bag wasn't the heaviest!), found a place to put our bags and headed out on a mission for coffee and breakfast. 10:05 came and we hadn't boarded the plane yet, finally a message popped up and the new departure time was 10:45. We were all starting to get nervous/excited that we really were going to take off in the weather conditions. After about ten minutes of having the plane de-iced (which made a few nervous and pay more attention to the safety instructions the flight attendants gave before takeoff), it was smooth traveling out of the snow into sunshine on the way to Houston.

As we got off the plane in Houston, Coach told us to run to our next plane because it was about to take off and they couldn't hold it for much longer since they already had held the plane for a half hour for us! We had to go from our landing gate E2 to our departing gate E22, which was a good five-minute speed walk away! Amelia Lamb and Abby Young were the first to arrive at the gate and began freaking and calling the rest of the team to run because the airport employees needed to start filling our seats in the plane with the stand-by passengers (who were hoping we wouldn't make it).

This flight I was sitting with Allie Parent and Ashley Geel! We felt like little kids because we kept looking out the window pointing out different views that we saw. The row beside us pointed out the Hollywood sign right before we landed. Once we touched down and got our baggage we headed right for Loyola Marymount for practice.  When practice ended and we all were so happy we didn't need to layer up instead we walked out in shorts and t-shirts. We had dinner at Boston Market, exactly what Allie Parent and I were talking about wanting ten minutes before arriving there!

Once everyone finished dinner we headed a half hour south to our hotel in Orange, California. At this point it was 12:30am on the east coast and it was starting to hit some of us that we had been up for nearly 19 hours straight. I'm rooming with Allie Parent and Danyelle Shufelt. We each showered and then went to bed!

I can't wait to see what the next 9 days will bring here in sunny California!
