Geel Named Second Team All-GNAC

STANDISH, ME – The 2011 GNAC Women's Basketball All Conference teams have been released and Saint Joseph's College junior center Ashley Geel (St. George, ME/Georges Valley) has earned Second Team honors.

Geel ranks as the team-leader in scoring (11.7 PPG), rebounding (6.4 RPG), field goal percentage (46.3%) and blocked shots (53) through 26 games. She has led the Monks in scoring 15 times this winter and paced the Royal Blue in rebounding in 14 contests. The All Conference honor is the first of her career.

Geel established herself as the preeminent shot-blocker in program history when she broke the Monks' career rejections record in a win over Mount Ida last Saturday. The 6'1 center has 152 blocked shots in 75 career games and is nine blocks away from tying the program's single-season mark.

Geel is the third SJC player to garner All-GNAC honors. Carolyn Freeman '10 and Meghan Daigle '10 both collected a pair of All Conference nods during their career.

Freshman guard Skyler Makkinje (Hillsboro, NH) has also been honored as the Monks' GNAC All-Sportsmanship honoree by a vote of her teammates.

Saint Joseph's (18-8, 9-3 GNAC), the #3 seed in the GNAC Tournament, will face off against #2 Suffolk University in Boston tonight in a conference semifinal contest at 7:00 PM. The Monks defeated #6 Emerson College, 69-48, in the quarterfinal round Tuesday night at the Alfond Center.
