National Girls & Women in Sports Day - Alyson Fillion
NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY

"February 3, 2021, marks the 35th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Every year, this celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the importance of staying mentally and physically healthy during challenging times. Whether virtual or other, we invite you to safely celebrate NGWSD in your community and to join the Women's Sports Foundation as we Lead Her Forward in 2021." -www.womenssportsfoundation.org

Since we are unable to visit local schools or host a free sports clinic on campus this year, we hope to inspire young female athletes by sharing the stories of our current student-athletes. We posed the same five questions to members of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and will feature their answers and photos every day during NGWSD week.

When did you realize you had a passion for your sport?
I knew I loved sports at a young age, but I truly fell in love with basketball around 4th grade when I played for my towns travel team.
At what age did you start playing sports/your sport?
I started playing soccer at the age of 4, but didn't start basketball in the 2nd grade so 7 years old.
Did someone inspire you?
My dad inspired me to start playing sports because we would always play in our backyard when I was little. Then, he was my coach for years when I was growing up.
Who is your biggest fan?

My whole family is so supportive, but my parents go to every game no matter how long the drive (even the NCAA tournament in NY). Also, my uncle is a big fan because he makes all kinds of apparel with my name, number, and even face on it.
Why do you play?

I play because I love how my teammates become my second family and I can count on them even when we are longer playing basketball. I also love the adrenaline rush of being in a big game and how sports have a way of bringing people together.
