WINTHROP, Mass.– Albertus Magnus College (21-3, 16-2 GNAC) and Saint Joseph's College of Maine (20-5, 15-2) have cemented the No. 1 seeds in next week's 2023 GNAC Women's Basketball Tournament, which tips off on Tuesday, February 21 with quarterfinal action at four different sites in three different states.
Albertus was featured in the first edition of the regional rankings two weeks ago, beginning the season with a 19-1 mark through 20 games and thus far going an unblemished 12-0 at home in 'The Nest.' The No. 1 South seed Falcons will play host to No. 4 North seed Colby-Sawyer College (9-16, 7-10 GNAC) on Tuesday at 5:30 PM as part of a doubleheader with the Albertus men's program.
SJC finished tied with Emmanuel College (20-5, 15-2 GNAC) in the North Division, going 1-1 against one another, 15-2 in GNAC play, with identical 20-5 overall records. As a result, a coin flip conducted by the conference office on Saturday afternoon came up Monks, so SJC will serve as the No. 1 seed in the North, with longtime GNAC powerhouse EC slotted in the No. 2 North seed.
SJC will host No. 4 South seed Johnson & Wales University ( 10-15, 7-11 GNAC) at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, also part of a doubleheader with the Monks men. Meanwhile, Emmanuel will welcome No. 3 South seed University of Saint Joseph (16-9, 12-6 GNAC) on Tuesday at 7:30 PM in the second of its quarterfinal doubleheader with the Saints men's team.
Tuesday's other quarterfinal contest will feature No. 2 South seed Regis College (12-12, 12-6 GNAC) hosting No. 3 North seed Rivier University (13-12, 10-7 GNAC) at 7:30 PM. The Pride won the two teams' head-to-gead matchup, 83-74, back on January 3.
In the event the two No. 1 seeds advance to the GNAC title game, Albertus would host the championship contest on Saturday, Feb. 25 as a result of its 73-68 victory over SJC late last month. The conference semifinals will take place on Thursday, Feb. 23 and there is no reseeding throughout the tournament.
