National Girls & Women in Sports Day - Elizabeth Callahan
NATIONAL GIRLS & WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY:

"February 3, 2021, marks the 35th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day (NGWSD). Every year, this celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. This year, with the COVID-19 pandemic, we recognize the importance of staying mentally and physically healthy during challenging times. Whether virtual or other, we invite you to safely celebrate NGWSD in your community and to join the Women's Sports Foundation as we Lead Her Forward in 2021." -www.womenssportsfoundation.org

Since we are unable to visit local schools or host a free sports clinic on campus this year, we hope to inspire young female athletes by sharing the stories of our current student-athletes. We posed the same five questions to members of our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and will feature their answers and photos every day during NGWSD week.

When did you realize you had a passion for your sport?
I first realized I had a passion for sports when summers would come around (the only season where I didn't play a sport) and I would be bored and always looking for something to do.
At what age did you start playing sports/your sport?
I started playing lacrosse in 3rd grade, I was playing softball the year before and I needed a change. I was the kid in the outfield picking flowers or sitting in the grass not paying attention. I switched to lacrosse to be able to run around, release that energy, and at the very least not pick flowers.
Did someone inspire you?
In my town the high school varsity team would often help "coach" the youth programs, and I can remember being in awe of the girls and thought they were so cool. I wanted to be just like them.
Who is your biggest fan?
My biggest fans are my parents. They always support me through showing up to every game (home and away) no matter the weather. I can remember the early games my freshman year of college looking over and seeing my dad and my mom sitting on the sideline so bundled up I can only recognize them by their jackets. They even build a plywood wall in the back yard for my brother and I to practice on! They are the best and my #1 fans in everything I do.
Why do you play?
I started playing cause I needed a release of energy, but now I play because I love the sport. I love the sense of competition between team and the feeling in the locker room before game day. I love how fun it is. Practice rarely feels like work, I enjoy going out onto the field with everyone and enjoying the time out there.
