Monks Suffer First Loss of Season

Standish, ME - Bates College (2-0) handed the Saint Joseph's College women's soccer team their first loss of the season in a lopsided 8-0 match. The #10 nationally-ranked Bobcats recorded 6 first half goals to put the contest out of reach.

Five players scored for Bates with senior Jessie Gargiulo (Boxborough, MA) and sophomore Amy Werblin (Huntington Beach, CA) leading the way with two goals apiece.

Gargiulo netted a pass from junior Jen Pflanz (Westwood, MA) just 8 minutes into the match to put the Bobcats on the scoreboard. Sophomore Julie Brown (Lynnfield, MA) scored on a pass from senior Kim Alexander at 16:29 and Gargiulo recorded her second goal in the 24th minute.

Things did not go the Monks' way in the first half as they added an own goal to make the score 4-0. Werblin scored her first of the game at 38:20 and a minute later, sophomore Jen Marino (Methuen, MA) knocked in a pass from first year Molly Radis (Portland, ME) to make it 6-0.

To their credit St. Joe's regrouped and played much stronger in the second half, holding Bates scoreless until Werblin scored off a pass from Radis at 76:12. Less than a minute later first-year Sarah Kwoh (Pittsburgh, PA) notched the final goal of the match off a pass from Marino.

First-year goalkeeper Monica Cuda (Everett, MA) had 10 saves in the loss while junior Nini Spalding (San Francisco, CA) and sophomore Mia Lidofsky (Providence, RI) split time in net for Bates and each had a save.
