Saints Slip Past Monks, 3-2

STANDISH, ME - Emmanuel College (6-4, 4-1 GNAC) earned a 3-2 conference victory over Saint Joseph's (4-4, 4-2 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon and were led by Amber Di Nucci ‘10 (Assonet, MA), who scored a pair of goals for the Saints to give her a team-best nine on the season. Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME) and Katie Jordan '09 (Sandwich, MA) netted the SJC goals and goalkeeper Katye Mayo ‘10 (Fairfield, ME) made four saves in the losing bid.

After over 36 minutes of scoreless play, Emmanuel midfielder Alexandra Blasser ‘10 (Pembroke, MA) scored her first goal of the year off a pass from Meghan Long ‘10 (Smithfield, RI) to provide the Saints with a 1-0 advantage.

St. Joe's had an opportunity to tie the game two minutes later when Call was sprung on a breakaway only to be thwarted by Saints goalkeeper Laureyn Furtney ‘09 (Barrington, NH), who made four saves in the contest to earn her sixth win of the season.

The score remained intact until the 66th minute when Di Nucci placed a rebounded ball past Mayo just under the crossbar to lift Emmanuel to a 2-0 lead.

Call answered the Di Nucci goal with eighth tally of the year just 36 seconds later when she redirected a Brianna Jordan ‘10 (Scarborough, ME) pass by Furtney, who came out of the net to challenge the SJC offensive charge.

Emmanuel took a 3-1 lead with 4:33 to play on Di Nucci's second marker of the contest. The sophomore took a pass from Long, who added her second assist of the game, and placed the ball in the left corner of the net past Mayo to notch her ninth goal of the year.

The Lady Monks showed late life when Katie Jordan recorded her third goal of the season with 45 seconds remaining on a corner kick. Jessica Needham ‘11 (E. Bridgewater, MA) and Elizabeth Theberge ‘11 (Danvers, MA) were credited with assists on the play that capped the game scoring with the Saints on top, 3-2.

St. Joe's outshot Emmanuel, 14-11 and the Saints edged the Lady Monks by an 8-6 margin in corner kicks.

Saint Joseph's will play host to non-conference Maine Maritime Academy on Sunday at 12:00 PM while Emmanuel is set to host GNAC foe Rivier College on October 7th at 7:00 PM.
