Monks Overpower Rams, 6-2

SOMERVILLE, MA - Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME) scored three goals and Jessica Needham '11 (E. Bridgewater, MA) added a pair of goals as Saint Joseph's College (4-3, 4-1 GNAC) defeated conference rival Suffolk University (3-4, 2-3 GNAC) by a 6-2 score on Tuesday afternoon.

Needham opened the game scoring in the 17th minute with her third goal of the season to put St. Joe's up 1-0. The goal came off a Rams turnover and was unassisted.

Suffolk countered six minutes later when Graciela Sanchez ‘11 (Milton, MA) tallied an unassisted goal of her own to knot the game at one apiece.

The Saint Joseph's offensive attack proved too much for the Rams however, as the Lady Monks rattled off the next three goals of the match. Call provided St. Joe's with a 2-1 lead when she netted her first of the game, unassisted, after a scramble in front of Rams goalkeeper Emily Joyce ‘11 (Easton, MA) in the 34th minute.

Katie Jordan '09 capped the first half scoring for the Royal Blue with her third goal of the year on a pass from Shannon Fitzgerald ‘12 (Amesbury, MA) at the 43:58 mark, lifting the Lady Monks to a 3-1 advantage going into the break.

Call commenced the second half scoring with her second goal of the game, sixth of the season, when she converted a penalty kick at the 62:19 mark. Suffolk's Leslie Hayden ‘12 (Ross, CA) answered seven minutes later with a penalty kick goal to lessen the SJC lead to 4-2.

The two-goal deficit was as close as the Rams would get in the second half, however, as Call went on to complete the hat-trick effort off a pass from Stephanie Masters ‘12 (South Portland, ME) in the 71st minute and Needham netted her second goal of the contest on a breakaway at the 87:06 mark to cap the game scoring and give the Lady Monks a 6-2 conference victory.

SJC goalkeeper Katye Mayo '10 (Fairfield, ME) made six stops in net and St. Joe's outshot the Rams 22-8 in the victory. The Lady Monks also held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks in the game.

Saint Joseph's is set to host GNAC foe Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 PM.
