Monks Hold Off Rams, 2-1

BOSTON, MA - Saint Joseph's College (8-4-2, 4-4-2 GNAC) outlasted Suffolk University (4-10-0, 4-6-0 GNAC), 2-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action on Wednesday evening. Junior Ashley Beaulieu (Durham, Maine) netted the eventual game-winner in the 34th minute of a crucial conference contest for the Monks.

St. Joe's senior Katherine Chambers (Hampden, Maine) opened the scoring when she netted her fourth goal of the season at the 6:34 mark. Beaulieu tallied what turned out to be the game-winning goal 27 minutes later, when she took a cross-pass from sophomore Kim Jordan (Bangor, Maine). The goal was Beaulieu's sixth, and first game-clinching, goal of the season.

The 2-0 cushion held until the 71st minute when Rams junior Meghan McHale (Halifax, Mass.) scored her first goal of the season Monks' lead in half, but two first-half markers would be enough to propel visiting Saint Joseph's College to victory.

Junior Jaci Lorenzen (Windham, Maine) was busy in goal for the Monks as she made 10 saves in the contest, including six in the first half as she ups her season mark to 8-4-2 in goal. Sophomore Melissa Brouillette (Shelton, Conn.) made four saves in a losing effort for the Rams.

With the triumph, Saint Joseph's improves to 5-1 in the history of the series with Suffolk University. Making a strong case for a GNAC Tournament berth, the Monks are riding a five-game undefeated streak with four wins and a tie over the last two weeks.

Both teams will be back in GNAC action on Saturday afternoon. Saint Joseph's College will host Lasell  College at 2:30pm, while Suffolk host St. Joseph University at 4:30pm.
