LOOKING BACK AT THE 2010's - WOMEN'S SOCCER

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College women's soccer program recorded a 107-63-20 (.563) overall record, including a 67-34-15 (.578) record in GNAC play, over the last 10 seasons.

The Monks claimed their first GNAC Championship in 2018 when the Royal Blue stunned top-seeded Lasell College, 1-0, on their home turf to earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

In recapping the decade, we have picked our top 10 games from the last 10 seasons and produced a 2010's record book as well as stat-filled infographics, which are embedded from our Instagram account below.

This feature is the third in a series of "Tale of the 2010's" releases with similar exhaustive recaps for all SJC programs to follow.

TOP 10 GAMES OF THE 2010's


#1 - Monks Upset Lasers, Claim First-Ever GNAC Championship - 11/4/2018 - Newton, Mass.

Senior forward Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) netted the game-winning goal in the 60th minute and the second-seeded Monks withstood the Lasers' offensive onslaught to earn the program's first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship with a 1-0 title bo/sports/wsoc/2018-19/boxscores/20181031_u4c0.xmlut triumph at top-seeded Lasell College.

IMPACT: The Monks' first GNAC crown ended the Lasers' streak of eight-consecutive conference titles and was the team's first win over Lasell since 2011.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • DaGraca scored what proved to be the clinching goal at the 59:14 mark, when senior Colleen Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) worked her way around two defenders and delivered a precise right-to-left crossing pass to her classmate, who headed a one-timer past the Lasell keeper
  • SJC freshman Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) was outstanding in the victory and tied her season high with 10 saves in the shutout
  • Lasell posted leads in shots (17-8), shots on goal (10-4), and corner kicks (7-2) on the afternoon

#2 - Thornton Hat Trick Propels Monks to GNAC Championship Game - 10/31/18 - Standish, Maine

With the score tied 1-1 and the clock nearing the 70th minute, senior Emily Thornton (Westbrook, Maine) netted three goals in a matter of eight minutes to lift the Monks to what proved to be an insurmountable lead.

IMPACT: Thornton's career day helped propel Saint Joseph's into the GNAC Championship game for the first time in team history.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • SJC freshman Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) registered 10 saves in the victory
  • Johnson & Wales held advantages in shots (20-15), shots on goal (12-6), and corner kicks (6-0) in a losing effort
  • The Monks found the board in the 11th minute sophomore Madeline Wood (Madison, Maine) potted her second goal of the season

#3 - DaGraca Nets Late Game-Winner, Monks Advance to GNAC Semifinals - 10/28/18 - Standish, Maine

Senior Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) scored with 6.1 seconds remaining in regulation to lift second-seeded Saint Joseph's College (14-3-0) past #7 Simmons College (8-8-1), 2-1, in a GNAC Women's Soccer Tournament quarterfinal at the SJC Athletics Complex.

IMPACT: The thrilling victory helped St. Joe's advance to the second round of the GNAC Tournament for the third-consecutive season.

NOTEWORTHY

  • SJC freshman Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) made three saves in the tourney triumph
  • Saint Joseph's held slight advantages in shots (13-11) and shots on goal (7-4) while Simmons posted a 7-4 lead in corner kicks
  • Sophomore McKenzie Murphy (West Baldwin, Maine) broke a scoreless tie with her fifth goal of the year off a Brenna Smith (Maynard, Mass.) pass at the 51:17 mark

#4 - Monks Top Sharks, 3-1, Advance to GNAC Semifinals - 10/30/16 - Standish, Maine

Sophomore forward Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) netted a pair of goals to help #4 Saint Joseph's College defeat #5 Simmons College, 3-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal at Deering Memorial Stadium.

IMPACT: The tournament triumph was the Monks' first since the 2009 season - when SJC topped Norwich in a GNAC quarterfinal contest - and snapped a six-game postseason losing streak for the Royal Blue.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Saint Joseph's junior captain Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped seven of the eight shots she faced to pick up the victory
  • The Monks and Sharks played essentially even on the stat sheet, as the hosts held slight advantages in shots (17-15), shots on goal (12-8), and corner kicks (5-4) in the tournament win

#5 - Monks Advance to GNAC Semifinals Via PK's - 11/2/19 - Standish, Maine

Senior Hailey Tarr (Eliot, Maine) converted her attempt in the second round of penalty kicks to help #2 Saint Joseph's College get past #7 University of Saint Joseph in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer tournament quarterfinal at the SJC Athletics Complex.

IMPACT: The exciting victory allowed the Monks to advance to the GNAC Tournament semifinal for the fourth-consecutive season.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Sophomore keeper Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) made eight saves on the afternoon
  • The Monks fought back from a pair of deficits during regulation, as SJC junior McKenzie Murphy (West Baldwin, Maine) scored to even the score at 1-1 in the 31st minute and freshman Madison Michaud (Presque Isle, Maine) netted the equalizer at the 85:17 mark, a tally that eventually forced extra play and PK's
  • Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (27-15), shots on goal (12-10), and corner kicks (6-3) on the afternoon.

#6 - Butler & Auclair Goals Lift Monks Past Saints in GNAC Semifinal, 2-1 - 11/5/19 - Standish, Maine

#2 Saint Joseph's College scored twice in a matter of four minutes midway through the second half to defeat #3 Emmanuel College, 2-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer tournament semifinal at the SJC Athletics Complex.

IMPACT: With the victory, the Monks continued their quest to repeat as GNAC Champions.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Sophomore keeper Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) made four saves in the victory
  • Trailing 1-0 in the 73rd minute, senior Hannah Butler (Melrose, Mass.) knotted the contest at 1-1
  • Sophomore Emma Auclair (Kittery, Maine) scored the game-winner less than four minutes later with classmate Ashley Emery (Madison, Maine) notching the assist
  • Saint Joseph's held a 19-6 advantage in shots – including a 12-1 lead in the second half – with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal on the evening

#7 - Monks Nip Huskies, 3-2 - 9/11/19 - Standish, Maine 

Despite playing down a man for over 20 minutes after an SJC player received a red card at the 68:21 mark, Saint Joseph's College managed to hold off University of Southern Maine, 3-2, in a hard-fought non-conference contest at the SJC Athletics Complex.

IMPACT: The early-season victory versus an in-state rival helped the young SJC side gel as a team and sparked a four-game winning streak for the Monks.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Sophomore keeper Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) made six saves and also registered a pair of assists off well-placed set pieces taken from near midfield
  • Junior McKenzie Murphy (West Baldwin, Maine), senior Brenna Smith (Maynard, Maine), and sophomore Eilidh Sidaway (Dedham, Maine) scored in the SJC triumph
  • Southern Maine held the advantage in shots (23-18) while Saint Joseph's posted a 9-8 edge in shots on goal and both teams were awarded five corner kicks on the evening

#8 - Monks Open with 1-0 Victory over Nor'easters - 8/31/18 - Standish, Maine

Senior Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) broke a scoreless tie in the 56th minute to lift Saint Joseph's College past University of New England, 1-0, in a non-conference women's soccer game at the SJC Athletics Complex.

IMPACT: The victory over the Nor'easters was the Monks' first since November 4th, 1998 when SJC topped UNE by a 2-0 score in Standish. University of New England entered the contest having defeated Saint Joseph's in five-consecutive meetings by a 21-4 composite score.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Freshman goalie Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) turned away all four of the shots she faced in her collegiate debut to pick up her first NCAA shutout
  • UNE held a 16-10 lead in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks while SJC notched a 5-4 edge in shots on goal on the evening

#9 - Beaulieu Scores in Overtime, Monks Tip Eagles, 1-0 - 8/31/13 - Bangor, Maine

Senior forward Ashley Beaulieu (Gorham, Maine) broke a scoreless deadlock with a goal off a Lauren Titus (Arundel, Maine) pass in the eighth minute of overtime to lift Saint Joseph's past Husson University in the second game of the 9th Annual Husson Classic.

IMPACT: The exciting triumph was the first career victory for Head Coach Jenelle Harris.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Senior goalkeeper Jaci Lorenzen (Windham, Maine) made two saves in a shutout performance
  • Saint Joseph's held an advantage in shots (13-7) and shots on goal (10-2) while Husson posted a 4-2 edge in corner kicks

#10 - DaGraca Propels Monks to 1-0 Overtime Victory - 10/13/18 - Providence, R.I.

Senior Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) broke a scoreless tie in the sixth overtime minute to propel Saint Joseph's College (11-2-0, 8-2-0 GNAC) past Johnson & Wales University (11-6-1, 8-2-0 GNAC) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer matchup.

IMPACT: The conference victory was huge for the Monks, who went on to earn the #2 seed in the GNAC Tournament and defeated the Wildcats at home in a semifinal several weeks later en route to winning the team's first GNAC Championship.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Saint Joseph's freshman Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) was excellent with eight saves in the shutout victory
  • Sophomore Brenna Smith (Maynard, Mass.) set up the winner with a long through pass to DaGraca
  • JWU held the advantage in shots (19-8), shots on goal (8-5), and corner kicks (10-2) in a losing effort
