Monks Start GNAC Season with 2-0 Victory

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Saint Joseph's College (1-1-0, 1-0-0 GNAC) defeated Norwich University (0-1-0, 0-1-0 GNAC), 2-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks applied plenty of offensive pressure throughout and found the back of the net in the 19th minute, when junior Madison Michaud (Presque Isle, Maine) headed in a lofted right-to-left pass in the box from sophomore Claudia Janelle (Biddeford, Maine).

St. Joe's doubled the advantage at the 74:15 mark, when freshman Alicen Burnham (Monmouth, Maine) netted her first NCAA goal. Sprung free down the right flank, Burnham delivered a perfectly placed shot to the lower left corner to account for the 2-0 final.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held sizeable leads in shots (26-4), shots on goal (15-2), and corner kicks (7-2) in the conference triumph.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) turned away both shots she faced in 45 minutes of play while freshman Alexandra Southworth (Rockport, Maine) went untested over 45 minutes in her collegiate debut.

Norwich netminder Kim Watt made 13 saves in the losing effort.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory Saint Joseph's improves to 10-2-3 in the history of the series with Norwich University and has now defeated the Cadets in four-consecutive meetings.

Saint Joseph's will play at University of Southern Maine on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
