Saint Joseph's Falls to Lasell in Double OT, 1-0

STANDISH, Maine – Lasell University (6-2-0, 6-0-0 GNAC) tipped Saint Joseph's College (6-6-0, 5-2-0 GNAC), 1-0, in a hard-fought Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game Saturday at SJC Athletics Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The conference rivals matched up well in the key conference matchup with the Lasers recording many of the close scoring opportunities throughout regulation. Both teams had chances to clinch the win in the first overtime frame, but the tilt was not decided until freshman Priscilla Martinelli (Plymouth, Mass.) weaved her way through two SJC defenders and tucked a shot into the lower left corner of the net at the 105:57 mark.

Lasell freshman Alyssa DeOliveira (East Providence, R.I.) led her team with seven shots, including four on goal, and narrowly missed scoring the winner on several occasions with attempts that sailed barely above the crossbar.

For the Monks, senior Kayley Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) registered three shots with two on target and had perhaps her team's best scoring chance in the 90th minute, when she raced around a defender on the right side of the box and steered a shot wide of the left post.

TEAM STATS:

Lasell held the lead in shots (21-9), shots on goal (9-6), and corner kicks (6-3) on the afternoon.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) turned away eight shots in the setback while her counterpart, Lasell sophomore Kyli Swann (Queen Creek, Ariz.) posted six saves in a shutout performance.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 6-12-2 in the history of the series with Lasell University. The Monks' only win over the Lasers in the last 13 meetings was a 1-0 GNAC Championship victory in Newton, Massachusetts on November 4th, 2018.
