Wildcats Rally Past Monks, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University (14-3-2, 12-0-1 GNAC) scored a pair of second half goals to defeat Saint Joseph's College (10-7-0, 9-3-0 GNAC), 2-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Kayley Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) put the Monks on the board at the 33:35 mark after stealing the ball from a JWU defender and slipping a shot to the bottom corner for a 1-0 lead.

Johnson & Wales tied the game in the second half through Hayley Viebrock (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) who picked up a loose ball outside the 18-yard box and curled a shot towards the far post that nestled inside the upper corner.

Johnson & Wales continued to pressure the Monks until they earned a corner with two minutes remaining.  Jordan Restivo (Utica, N.Y.) drove the corner kick into a dangerous area where Emily DeRoehn (Old Lyme, Conn.) connected on a header that flew into the bottom corner, giving the Wildcats a 2-1 advantage. A last second shot on a free kick from SJC senior goalkeeper Adia Grogan (Kennebunk, Maine) flew over the net with three seconds left, marking the victory for the Wildcats.

Grogan finished the contest with 11 saves while JWU keepers Liz Kenney and Carly McCrumb did not make a save on the afternoon.

The Wildcats held the lead in shots (28-4), shots on goal (28-4), and corner kicks (9-1) on the afternoon.

Saint Joseph's closes out the regular season on Wednesday with a home GNAC contest versus Colby-Sawyer College at 7:30 PM.
