Bobcats Nip Monks, 2-1

LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College (5-6-2) edged Saint Joseph's College (6-8-1), 2-1, in a non-conference women's soccer contest on Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Bobcats opened the scoring in the 19th minute when Elizabeth Patrick drilled a shot to the bottom right corner of the net from 20 yards out. The 1-0 advantage held until the 63rd minute, when Abby Alter registered her first goal of the year on a rebound after SJC junior keeper Carly Downey (Yarmouth, Maine) turned away a shot by Maeve Parmelee.

The Monks cut their deficit to 2-1 in the 78th minute when sophomore Alicen Burnham (Monmouth, Maine) potted her third tally of the season. Senior Nikki Sheehan (Medway, Mass.), who was credited with an assist on the score, hit the post with a header and the rebound fell to Burnham, who tapped a shot into the net.

TEAM STATS:

Bates held the lead in shots (22-10) and shots on goal (9-6) while Saint Joseph's held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks on the evening.

THE KEEPERS:

Downey made six saves in nearly 72 minutes of play while freshman Manuela Mejia (Winthrop, Mass.) made one stop in 18+ minutes of relief. Bates featured three goalies in the victory, as Ruby Reimann, Chase Crawford, and Samantha Bunar combined to steer away five shots.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss Saint Joseph's falls to 1-9-0 all-time versus Bates College. The Monks defeated the Bobcats by a 1-0 score in Standish last fall.

Saint Joseph's will host Rivier University on Wednesday in a conference contest set to start at 7:30 PM.
