Alyssa Marchant, Junior, Women's Lacrosse

Alyssa Marchant, Junior, Women's Lacrosse

Alyssa Marchant is a two-year captain, 2009 First Team All-GNAC honoree and two-time GNAC All-Tournament recipient as a member of the Saint Joseph's Women's Lacrosse team, which is currently 10-1-1 overall and 7-0 in GNAC play as a third-year varsity program. She became the first player in SJC program history to reach the 100-goal plateau with her second tally in a win over Thomas College on March 18th and has paced the Monks in goals in each of her first two seasons. As of April 16th, Marchant leads the 2010 squad in goals (52) and groundballs (66), with both totals ranking as personal career-bests, and is the Monks' all-time leading goal-scorer with 144 goals in 39 career contests.

Head Coach Anna  Gordon:

Alyssa is a rare player who has made her mark on this program since the first day of practice freshman year.  She contributes to our team both on and off the field.  Her statistics prove she’s a tremendous lacrosse player, but Alyssa’s uncharted strength is her drive and motivation to push herself to the next level.  It’s the quality I most admire in her and know that it’s the characteristic her teammates strive to emulate.

Feature Questions

Why did you choose Saint Joseph's College?

I was looking for a small school with a good nursing program not too far from home. I also wanted to play lacrosse. Saint Josephs had those two major factors and when I came to visit and saw how pretty it was I knew I wanted to be here.

What was your first job (actually received a paycheck)?

When I was 18, I worked as a waitress at "The Restaurant" in Woburn, Ma.

Who would you like to trade places for a day with and why?

The wife of a Celtics player - so I could go to all the games and not have to worry about studying or doing any work.

What is on your "Bucket List?"

I would like to travel to Europe when I get out of school.

Talent you'd most like to have:

Being able to read what's on people's minds

What do you drive?

I drive a 2004 Chrysler Sebring

What is your motto?

To succeed...You need to find something to hold on to, something to motivate you, something to inspire you.

Do you have any superstitions before you go into a big game?

No big superstitions. I just listen to music before and try to stay focused and encourage my teammates to do the same. Once we step onto the field we always have to make sure we do the same routine for every game.

What is your most memorable moment as an athlete at SJC?

My most memorable moment as an athlete at SJC was when I scored the first goal for the Monks in March 18, 2008 and also when I scored my 100th career goal this season in our second game vs. Thomas college, especially knowing that it was a first for SJC.

Who has had the greatest impact on your life?

My mom and dad, who do everything for me and are my biggest fans. My family has always supported and encouraged me and pushed me to succeed in life.

Can you tell us something about you that most people don't know?

I sleep on average 3 hours a night and still am able to function somehow.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I most likely see myself engaged or married living somewhere around Wakefield or in California and working as a pediatric nurse.

If you could meet anyone (past or present) who would it be and why?

I would love to meet Oprah. She is intelligent and has worked hard to become one of the wealthiest women in our country. She understands the importance of an education and has made monetary contributions to those less fortunate.

What are your hobbies?

Playing any sports like soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. Going to the beach in the summer, shopping, hanging out with my family and friends, and being able to just have fun and relax when I can.

What is your ideal day away from athletics?

A day in the summer when I don’t have any work or studying to do and can just wake up, get coffee, go to the beach maybe a quick trip to the mall and a night out in town with all my friends.

Do you plan on playing sports or coaching after you graduate?

Yes definitely! After I get settled with a job I would like to get involved and coach in my town's youth lacrosse league or maybe even the high school program because I would love to teach kids about a sport that I love and am passionate about. I would also love to join a lacrosse league or even basketball league as well as play some pickup games once I am out of school.

What are your personal and team goals for this season?

My personal goal this year is to be the best player I can be on and off the field and have no regrets. I want to be able to make a difference for me and my team, both offensively and defensively. For team goals, it would be winning the GNAC championship this year and making our first appearance in the NCAA tournament. I would like to see the team do as well as we did last year. We are doing so well now and with our experience and new additions to the team, I think that we definitely can achieve this goal. Most importantly, I want to beat Emerson because the last two years they overpowered us and we were not able to score too many goals. But this may be the year!

Anything else you'd like to add?

This is my second year as one of the captains and this is truly an honor. I love and respect my teammates. We all get along and I think this is why we are doing so well in the season right now. I have made good friends at St. Joe's and have some great memories that will last a lifetime and hopefully many more to come.
