Blake Edwards, Senior, Men's Lacrosse

Blake Edwards, Senior, Men's Lacrosse

Blake Edwards is about to begin his fourth year as a member of the Saint Joseph’s College Men’s Lacrosse team and has played in 41 games with 17 goals, 10 assists and 70 ground balls in his collegiate career. A 2010 All-NAC Academic honoree, Edwards has started in 29 contests over three seasons and figures to be key player for the Monks this season as the team expects to make a deep run in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament as a first-year league-member.

Head Coach Mike Edgar:

Blake has been a member of the men’s lacrosse team since our first year and is part of a small group to have played here all four years. Blake exemplifies what we coaches want a student athlete to be. He has the highest GPA on the team and works equally hard on the field. Blake had never played lacrosse prior to joining the SJC team as a freshman and has become a guy that can be counted on whenever, and wherever, we need him. He is well-liked and respected by team members and his coaches. Even though he has not been a captain he has all the leadership qualities a coach would want. He is well-respected and the underclassmen listen to him. He
works very hard in the classroom and often studies during road trips,
which explains his high GPA and his goal of becoming a doctor.

Feature Questions

How did you end up at Saint Joseph’s after attending high school in Oregon?

My dad was in the military when I was younger, a family friend that we stayed in touch with had a daughter who was going here and they wanted me to check it out. I came on a tour the summer before my senior year of high school and really liked the school so I went with it.

Why did you choose Saint Joseph's College?

The campus is amazing and the small community atmosphere made it seem like an easy transition from high school. The smaller class sizes and close interaction with the professors was also a huge draw.

What is/was your favorite class at St. Joe's and why?

Capstone experience because I got to go on a ten-day trip to Italy and see Venice, Florence, and Rome. Can't really beat an experience like that!

What was your first job (actually received a paycheck)?

My first job was as a cart boy at Fred Meyers (a west coast Wal-Mart). Basically I cleaned the store, stocked the carts, and did everything else no one wanted to do.

Who would you like to trade places for a day with and why?

Kevin Durant. He is one of the most dominant players in the NBA right now and no one seems to hate him like fans hate Kobe and LeBron.

What is on your "Bucket List?"

Travel through Europe, skydive, do something important enough to have my name engraved in something.

Talent you'd most like to have:

To be able to sing...probably a talent my friends would like me to have.

What do you drive?

A white Chevy Tracker. Looks exactly like our security vehicles on campus - always wanted to paint it silver and see what I could get away with.

What is your motto?

Live each day like it’s your first, last, and only.

Do you have any superstitions before you go into a big game?

I like to do the triangle eye-black pattern before games. It goes back to my football days and just makes me feel ready.

Why did you choose your jersey #?

We only have jersey numbers 00-30 and my number in HS was 81 so I had to go all the way back to my little league baseball days when I was 15.

What is your most memorable moment as an athlete at SJC?

When Elliot LaMarre and I tied the NCAA record for quickest consecutive goals scored (four seconds, versus Mitchell College 4/28/10)

Who has had the greatest impact on your life?

My parents number one, but besides them my defensive line coach for HS football. He was someone who devoted so much time to the game and the players that I really respected him and still keep in touch with him to this day.

You played football in high school – why did you choose to play lacrosse in college?

I played football in HS and really enjoyed it. I was debating on trying to play in college, but at the time I was applying to schools where I wasn't big enough to seriously consider the prospect of playing so I decided to pick a school based on academics. When I came here I met a few fellow freshmen who were going to play. They wanted me to try out since it was a first year program and they seriously needed bodies. At first I was apprehensive because I had never even seen a lacrosse game and it takes a lot of skill I didn't think I would have, but they convinced me I would get to hit people which I knew I could do and I decided to try out. It was an awesome way to stay in competitive athletics and is one of the best decisions I've made here at St. Joe's.

Can you tell us something about you that most people don't know?

I talk in my sleep and apparently it can be quite comical at times.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

Starting a residency at a hospital after I complete medical school.

If you could meet anyone (past or present) who would it be and why?

Will Smith. He's my favorite actor and it seems like he would be an awesome person to hang out with for a day.

What are your hobbies?

Just listening to music, watching movies, reading books, and playing golf. It's all pretty bland and boring but it works for me.

What is your ideal day away from athletics?

Just hanging out with friends being lazy, watching movies, playing video games. Camping would be fun too.

The lacrosse team took its first spring trip last year and will travel to the Washington, D.C. area this season. Besides the games, what are you looking forward to on this year’s trip?

I didn't go on the trip to NYC with the team last year because I was on my honors trip to Italy. We are going to Washington DC this year which will be an awesome opportunity to see the capital. We will be going on a tour of the White House while there. I'm excited to see it and all the history it holds.

Do you plan on playing sports or coaching after you graduate?

Yes, I would like to coach HS football when I'm older.

What are your personal and team goals for this season?

I would like to reach double digits in goals and assists this year. As a team our goal is to win the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament as a first-year member of the league.
