Andy LeConte '09 serves as a captain for the
2008 Saint Joseph's College Golf team and is having a very
successful senior season. LeConte has placed as the top SJC golfer
in five of the team's seven events this season and recently posted
his career-best round, 73 strokes in the second day of the
Husson Invitational. For his
efforts, LeConte has been named GNAC Golfer of the Week (9/15) and
has been listed on the conference honor roll twice (9/24,
10/1).
Coach Jaime Smyth on Andy:
"I have had the pleasure of coaching Andy the past four seasons on
the golf team. In his time here I have seen Andy mature so much,
both as a golfer and as a person. He has been our most consistent
golfer this year and has played in the number one spot all season
long. He is also an exceptional student and takes great pride in
what he does in the classroom as well as on the golf course. Andy
has a bright future ahead of him and I will miss his presence
greatly next season."
What was your first job?
I served clambakes at Foster's Downeast Clambake in York, ME.
Who would you like to trade places for a day with and
why?
I would like to trade places with Peter Chiarelli, General Manager
of the Boston Bruins. I want his job because I think it would be a
lot of fun to run a sports team, especially the Bruins.
What is on your "Bucket List?"
I would like to travel to Alaska, go Salmon fishing in
Newfoundland, and go hunting in Montana.
Talent you'd most like to have:
I would like to be able to sing and not have people look at me
weird.
What do you drive?
Volkswagen Jetta
Do you have any superstitions before you go into a
tournament?
When I am warming up before I get on the golf course, I don't tie
my shoes. I tie them before I walk over to the first tee. I also
warm up with the same clubs in the same order before every
match.
How old were you when you started playing
golf?
I think I was around 5 or 6 when I started playing golf. I used to
follow my Dad around the course and hit shots when he told me it
was alright.
What is the most challenging aspect of playing
golf?
The most difficult aspect to playing golf for me is the mental part
of the game. It is so difficult to keep a clear head out on the
course when you make a mistake and things aren't going well for
you.
While playing at St. Joe's, which course has been the most
difficult? Why?
The two courses that we play in Brewster, MA for the New England
Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship are the most
difficult. They are long and narrow and the wind always seems to
howl down on the Cape. I have played down there six times before
and I think it has rained at least four of them so that doesn't
help either.
What is your most memorable moment as an athlete at
SJC?
Last year, at the Thomas College Invitational at Waterville Country
Club we beat Husson College for the first time in my college career
and won the tournament. My score was the one that sealed the win
for us.
Who has had the greatest impact on your life?
My parents. They have been so supportive of everything that I have
done from academics to sports and everything in between. They
pushed me to go to college and helped me pick the college that
would be the best fit for me. It has worked out extremely well.
Why did you choose Saint Joseph's College?
I looked at several schools, big and small, and Saint Joseph's just
felt right. I don't like the city atmosphere and the location of
Saint Joseph's is a great fit for me. The small size of the campus
is great because everything is so close.
Can you tell us something about you that most people don't
know?
I am mostly color blind.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself, hopefully, living and working in Maine.
If you could meet anyone (past or present) who would it be
and why?
I would like to meet my mother's father because he died before I
was born. My mother and grandmother both tell me how much the two
of us have in common and how well we would have gotten along.
What are your hobbies?
Golf is my favorite hobby but fishing and hunting are pretty close.
I like being out in the woods where things are calm and
peaceful.
What is your ideal day away from golf?
I would spend the day fly fishing on a river out in the woods. I
would be out in the woods away from technology and the demands of
everyday life. I would spend the night around a campfire with
friends.
Do you see yourself playing golf after
college?
Absolutely. Golf is a sport that I can see myself playing for the
rest of my life. As long as I can walk and swing a club, I will be
playing golf.
What goals do you have for yourself and the golf team this
season?
My goals for the team are to win at least one tournament because we
have done that every year that I have played. My goal is to be the
individual winner of at least one tournament this season.
