Head Volleyball Coach, John Razsa:
Brooke Perry has been dedicated to playing volleyball all 4 of
her years here. She began playing volleyball her junior season at
Biddeford H.S. and loved it! She sought out the Portland North
Junior Olympic program and participated in it for 2 years. I
recruited her to play for me when I was at USM, but she chose SJC
because of its stellar nursing program. I wanted her on the USM
volleyball team because she was a very good player, but also for
her positive attitude, great character and good spirit.
Brooke has always exhibited unselfishness in her approach to the
game and to her teammates. A good example of this was her
willingness to move to the middle hitter position - despite her
small size for that role- because it's how she could best
contribute to the team.
As a junior, she became a captain of the team because of those
attitudes and her ability to share them as a leader. She has been a
tremendous Senior Captain. In that role, Brooke has carried on
positive St. Joe's traditions such as community service and secret
buddies. These "extras", her on court leadership by example, and
her strong voice in our huddles have served the team extremely
well. She's made it her special mission to treat her teammates as
sisters and insist that they all be good sisters to each other.
She's shown us how to take on all the adversity of a tough season
and always conduct ourselves positively. No negativity, no junk and
no drama has been her motto.
What is your most memorable moment as an athlete at
SJC?
"My most memorable moments as an athlete here were Andy's (Asst.
Coach Pohl) long memorable talks about Nebraska. I have also made
many awesome friends over the past four years and my times here at
SJC were some of the most memorable moments of my life."
Who has had the greatest impact on your
life?
"My parents have had the greatest impact on my life. They have
always been there for me throughout my whole life."
Why did you choose SJC?
"The reason I chose SJC was because of the nursing program that is
offered here and it is only an hour away from my house, which is
good because I commute to school."
Can you tell us something about you that most people
don't know?
"One thing that most people do not know about me is that I only
started playing volleyball my junior year of high school after I
stopped playing soccer. Now I have been playing for six years and I
am the captain of the volleyball team."
What are your plans after graduation?
"I want to work in the emergency room and I will have my bachelor's
degree in nursing. I am also getting married next September after
graduation."
What are your favorite Book/ Movie/ Food/ TV Show?
"I do not really read many books but I like to read magazines and
my favorite right now is Bridal Magazine. My favorite movie is I
Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry because Adam Sandler is my
favorite actor. I think he is hilarious. My favorite food is ice
cream and my favorite TV Show is watching the Patriots game every
Sunday."
What would you say is the hardest part of being a
captain of a collegiate team?
"The hardest part of being a collegiate captain is trying to make
everybody on the team happy. Another hard part is trying to balance
being a leader and being a friend at the same time."
After College do you still want to participate in your
sport?
"Yes I would love to play volleyball after college and I have
definitely considered coaching before."
The Volleyball team is going through a tough stretch
this season. As a captain how do you keep team morale high? What do
you say to keep your team on the top of their game?
"I try to tell them to not be so hard on themselves and to just go
out there and have fun because the four years here at SJC go by so
fast and if you don't enjoy them then you feel like you've missed
out on a lot."
