Softball Head Coach Jamie Smyth '92

"Christy represents all the things that a coach looks for in a player.  She has been someone who has improved every year and pitched in some of our biggest games to date.  She has a great attitude and is a player that is all about the team.  Christy is one of our captains and does a great job at leading by example, both on and off the field.  She has played hurt for us this year and pitched many games on pure guts and determination.  Christy also carries a high GPA and is involved with Saint Joseph's SACC committee."

Feature Questions

Why did you choose Saint Joseph's College?

After applying to fourteen or so schools and really not knowing what I wanted to do or where I wanted to be, my mom suggested I check out St. Joe's. I was hesitant at first because I'd never been to Maine and it sounded so small, but I got here, visited, and fell in love! Everyone was friendly, it was homelike, and even though softball wasn't a priority when picking schools, when I went down to watch teams home opener and heard John Forgerty's "put me in coach" on the warm up CD, I knew it was the school for me.

What was your first job?

I worked at High Meadow Resort starting at 15 doing food prep. I love going back there every summer to this day.

Who would you like to trade places for a day with and why?

I guess the president. Now there's a challenge. Making one decision that affects the entire nation would not be one I'd want to make but I think it be interesting to see how he does it.

What is on your "Bucket List?"

Obviously I want to travel the world, I want to open a family/sports pub, and I for some reason I've always wanted to buy an old house to fix up.

Talent you'd most like to have:

I'd love to be able to draw.

What do you drive?

2006 Kia Spectra

What is your motto?

Challenge yourself! Don't take the easy path. Life had plenty of bumps along the road and those bumps make you a stronger person.

What is your favorite Coach Smyth quote?

There's no one favorite, but many memorable. Coach Smyth is a man of many interesting quotes and large words. The first and foremost being the "Are you pumped?" The second was a full night of events. One night of pitcher/ catcher workouts that will forever stand out in my head is the night him and I apparently showed our age by having to explain what "handing someone there lunch" meant, K proving to coach geometrically that the distance from home to second was in fact 83.5 feet not well over 100 feet like coach thought, and Coach's "Good Night Irene" quote referring to a ball that would have been a home run had the field had a fence. We all swore he was talking about the song, "Come on Ilene" after we'd proved him wrong about so many previous things that night.

Do you have any superstitions before you go into a big game?

Do not cross the bats! And ever since freshman year of high school I've listened to "Put me in Coach" before every game I play.

What is your most memorable moment as an athlete at SJC?

Easy. Beating RPI my sophomore year in Florida. They were a very intimidating team from the time they warmed up to the very last pitch. They did everything in sync and literally watching them put me in awe and not going to lie, scared the you know what out of me to pitch to them. We were down at first, but Liddy brought us back into the game with a grand slam. From that point on they couldn't' stop us. We wound up beating them 13-9. I've never heard any team as loud and excited as we were throughout this game. We had a similar game like this against WNEC this past Florida trip. That game is also one I won't forget because WNEC is a close to home college that I had highly considered going to.

What is your funniest or most embarrassing moment (as an SJC athlete)?

There are so many funny and embarrassing moments. Our spring break trip to Florida always has a bunch. Freshman year the team decided to tell the waiter it was my birthday at Olive Garden. Someone told me it was coach's idea so when we went to Hooters for dinner that week, I made sure to tell them it was his birthday. Sophomore year, Tash imitated coach's "are you pumped?" speech. If you know Coach Smyth and have never seen or even heard of this re-enactment, I suggest you do. We've got it on tape!

Who has had the greatest impact on your life?

My parents of course. They taught me how to be a team player on and off the field, to strive for the best, and to work for everything. My mom pushed me in the classroom and my dad pushed me on the field. Actually they both pushed me on the field because throughout my lifetime they've both had the opportunity to coach me. They've made me who I am today and they themselves challenge me every day and I'm so thankful for it.

Can you tell us something about you that most people don't know?

I'm a sous Chef. (Yes I can actually cook!)

Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to work my way up into a Management position of a high scale Resort of some sort.

What are your hobbies?

I love to do anything outdoors, spend time with friends, and just try to relax when time allows it.

What is your ideal day away from athletics?

A dream come true! Just kidding. Being a student athlete and one of the captains of the softball team is honestly a full time job at times. But I love it. I can't imagine it any other way right now but I guess after next year I will know what its like. So I'll have to get back to you on that one.

As a business management major, what type of job will you seek after graduation?

I want to manage a resort of some sort. Or a major banquet facility.

Do you plan on playing or coaching softball after you leave St. Joe's?

Softball will probably always be a part of my life. I'll probably play "old man" softball, as I call it, and I hope to coach my kids one day.

What are your personal and team goals for this season?

My personal goal is to try to bring my ERA down below a 2.5, prove the coach I can hit by bugging him until he gives me at least one at bat, and really just to do my best while having fun. My team goal is to win GNAC's which is absolutely possible with all the talent we have on this team. Every single girl on this team brings their own special talent and spark and the days we put everything together, no one can touch us! Love you girls!
