PORTLAND, ME – Saint Joseph’s College was well-represented in the Cycle4Care Collegiate Challenge at the Finley Recreation Center on Friday, January 31st.

The annual event includes athletes from Saint Joseph’s College, University of New England and University of Southern Maine. The winner of the Collegiate Challenge is the institution that raises the largest amount of money, which is accumulated through registration fees ($5 per participant) and individual sponsorship donations. Each athlete is asked to raise at least $50.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Cancer Community Center's free wellness activities and support services – including wellness activities, educational resources, and emotional support - provided to cancer patients and survivors as well as their family, friends and co-workers in the State of Maine.

All services from the Cancer Community Center are free of charge, so anyone can benefit from the knowledge and experiences found at the facility. (Visit www.cancercommunitycenter.org for more information)

With nearly 80 student-athletes in attendance, Saint Joseph’s helped the organization reach the fundraising goal of $20,000 and contributed nearly $1,000 to the worthy cause. More than 300 people attended this year’s event, which featured 120 spinning bikes from 4:00 PM to 12:00 AM.

Cycle4Care is an indoor cycling extravaganza, also known as spinning.  Participants in Cycle4Care register to spin for one, two, three or hour shifts, with each hour featuring a qualified spin instructor to set the pace.

Athletes from the Saint Joseph's women's lacrosse, men's soccer, women's soccer, field hockey, volleyball, track and field/cross country and golf teams participated in the Cycle4Care fundraiser.

“We appreciate (the Saint Joseph’s) teams getting involved,” adds Jennifer Nelson, the Development Director at the Cancer Community Center. “We hope that next year we can increase the amount raised by each of the schools!”
