STANDISH, ME - St. Joe's defeated in-state rival
Colby College, 6-3, on Wednesday afternoon. SR
Steve Stout (Gloucester, MA)
worked 5 innings in relief to earn his first win of the season and
JR outfielder Wade Oliver (Owls
Head, ME) registered 2 hits and knocked home 2 runs in the victory.
The Monks improved to 14-10 overall this season with the win.
Colby put a run on the board in the top of the first inning when
lead off hitter SR Nick Spillane (Darien, CT) scored on a 6-4-3
double play turned by the SJC infield. SR Brian
Schools (Gorham, ME) scored the tying run in the
bottom of the inning off of a SR Luke
Enman (Milan, NH) groundout to second base.
The Monks scored 4 runs off of 5 hits in the bottom of the second
to secure a 5-1 lead. SR Dustin
Spiller (Gorham, ME) and SO Pat
Moran (Winterport, ME) opened the inning with
back-to-back singles. FY Todd
Keneborus (Hollis Center, ME) rapped a single over
the first baseman's head to plate Spiller while
Moran advanced to second. Moran stole third base and scored on a SO
Travis Adams (Saco, ME) grounder
to the Colby shortstop while Keneborus reached
second base. Next up was FY John
Swasey (South Berwick, ME), who slapped a single
to center to advance Keneborus to third. Leadoff
hitter Wade Oliver sent both
freshmen home with a single to provide the Monks with some
breathing room on the scoreboard.
Travis Adams scored the sixth SJC
run in the 4th inning on a first and third double-steal play with
teammate John Swasey, who
successfully swiped second base.
Stout held Colby in check until the fifth inning when SO Ryan
Conlon (Ridgefield, CT) hit a two-run blast over the left field
wall, just beyond the reach of Monks outfielder
Todd Keneborus, to lessen the SJC
lead to 6-3.
The Monks utilized their bullpen depth as pitchers SR
David Doucette (Ipswich, MA), SO
Chris Nanof (Clinton, MA) and
Brian Schools combined to throw 4
innings of scoreless relief to preserve the victory for the Royal
Blue. Nanof struck out 3 Colby batters in two
innings of work and Schools closed out the 9th
inning to notch his third save of the season.
For the Monks, Todd Keneborus was
2-4 with a run and an RBI and recorded a key outfield assist when
he threw out SO Michael Cuqua (Walpole, MA) at home plate in the
seventh inning to halt a potential Colby rally with the
inning-ending double play.
For Colby, Ryan Conlon was 2-4 with a run and 2 RBI's and FY John
Lerner (Canton, MA) went 2-3 in the losing effort. Mules' starter
SO Nick Ruocco (Lexington, MA) takes the loss on the mound.
St. Joe's will travel to Northfield, VT on Saturday 4/12 to play
GNAC opponent Norwich University in a doubleheader that is slated
to begin at 1:00 PM.
