Sanborn Reaches 500-Win Mark

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's Baseball Head Coach Will Sanborn '86 notched his 500th career win when the Monks defeated Suffolk University in the 2011 GNAC Championship game at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Sunday.

Sanborn, now 500-284-5 (.638), is the winningest and most successful coach in Saint Joseph's College Baseball history. He also has the most wins by a single-sport head coach in SJC Athletics history and is five wins shy of surpassing Rick Simonds as the all-time Saint Joseph's leader in victories. Simonds registered a 504-187 (.729) record in 23 seasons as the men's basketball coach and one year as the softball team leader.

Coach Sanborn has guided the Monks to 10 conference championships and six regional crowns in his career. His teams have reached the 30-win mark in seven different seasons and surpassed the 20-win plateau a total of 15 times in his 19 years at the helm.

Prior to the start of the 2011 campaign, the Monks have the third-most wins (190) and the fourth-highest winning percentage (.714) in the New England Region since the start of the 2005 season. St. Joe's is 83-17 (.830) in conference regular-season play and 22-2 (.917) in conference tournament contests over the last seven seasons.

Sanborn, who has collected four Coach of the Year accolades in his career, led his team to one of the program's most successful seasons last spring when the Monks went 35-13 overall, captured the GNAC Championship, and proceeded to win three NCAA DIII Tournament tilts at the 2010 New England Regional.

St. Joe's defeated #5 Worcester State, #3 Western New England College and #2 Wheaton College – ranked 16th nationally at the time – as the #8 seed at the 2010 New England Regional. The Monks' regional run came to an end with a hard-fought 6-5 loss in 11 innings at the hands of top-seeded Tufts University.

With the 2011 conference crown and the GNAC automatic qualifier, St. Joe's (29-11, 12-2 GNAC) will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last six years. The national tourney begins on May 18th and the New England Regional will take place at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Massachusetts.
