Monks Score 30 Runs off 31 Hits in Doubleheader Sweep over Anchormen

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College (5-1) won a pair of games against Rhode Island College (7-3) in dominant fashion on Thursday afternoon. In the opener, the Monks toppled the Anchormen, 19-9, and completed the sweep with a come-from-behind 11-5 triumph.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of the first en route to scoring 10 runs off nine hits and an RIC error. The Anchormen answered with five runs in the bottom of the first, but St. Joe's immediately put up four runs off three hits in the second and managed to stay well ahead of their New England Region counterpart.

ON THE MOUND:

SJC freshman Roderick Maynard (Baldwin, Maine) took the ball for his first collegiate start but lasted just 2/3 innings after allowing five runs off four hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts. Junior Steven Albert (Worcester, Mass.) picked up his first win of the season after tossing 5.1 innings of relief, allowing four runs off seven hits with four K's, and freshman Luke Klenda (Yarmouth, Maine) yielded one hit in an otherwise clean inning of relief.

RIC starter Daniel Greaves (Warwick, R.I.) took the loss after surrendering 14 runs (12 earned) off 12 hits and two walks in two innings.

OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior third baseman Taylor Black (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) went 3-3 with two runs, two doubles, a triple, and six RBI
  • Sophomore second baseman Joey Murphy (Derry, N.H.) was 3-4 with three runs, a double, a stolen base, and two RBI
  • Junior center fielder Chris Gerossie (Chester, N.H.) went 2-2 with three runs, a double, a triple, two walks, and three RBI
  • Senior shortstop Max McCoomb (South Berwick, Maine) added two hits, three runs, a double, and an RBI in four at-bats
  • Senior designated hitter Jameson Collins (Sandown, N.H.) was 2-4 with a run, a double, and three RBI

OFF THE BAT – RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE:

  • Senior Austin Barry (North Kingstown, R.I.) was 3-3 with two runs, a double, a steal, and a pair of RBI
  • Sophomore Mike Webb (Pawtucket, R.I.) went 2-4 with a run, a triple, and four RBI

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Trailing 5-1 going into the bottom of the third, the Monks went on to score 10 unanswered runs with three in the third, two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and four in the sixth, to account for the 11-5 triumph.

Facing a 5-4 deficit with two out in the bottom of the fourth, McCoomb plated sophomore Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) with a single to left, stole second, and scored when Black roped a base hit up the middle, giving the Monks their first lead in the nightcap. With junior reliever Josh Partridge (Deerfield, N.H.) dealing on the mound, RIC was held in check for the remainder of the game.

ON THE MOUND:

Senior Cejay Suarez (Abington, Mass.) earned his first NCAA start but did not factor into the decision after allowing five runs (four earned) off seven hits and three walks with two K's in 2.2 innings. Junior Marc Poirier (Lunenburg, Mass.) yielded a hit and a walk with a strikeout in 2/3 inning of relief and Partridge was credited with the victory after allowing just one hit with three punch-outs in 3.2 frames of outstanding relief.

For RIC, junior starter Myles Levy (Cranston, R.I.) took the loss after giving up six runs off 10 hits with one strikeout in four innings.

OFF THE BAT – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Black went 3-4 with two runs, a stolen base, and two RBI
  • McCoomb was 3-4 with three runs, a double, two steals, and an RBI
  • Gerossie added two hits, a run, and two RBI in two at-bats
  • Sophomore first baseman Noah McDaniel (Eliot, Maine) went 2-4 with a run, and two RBI
  • Senior right fielder Dennis Meehan (Gardiner, Maine) was 2-3 with a double and a pair of RBI

OFF THE BAT – RHODE ISLAND COLLEGE:

  • Junior first baseman Frank Pettinato (Cranston, R.I.) was 3-4 with a run scored and three RBI
  • Freshman Josh Silva (Seekonk, Mass.) went 2-4 with a run and a double

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the sweep, Saint Joseph's improves to 6-0 in the history of the matchup with Rhode Island College. These two teams last met exactly four years ago to the day in Florida, when the Monks toppled the Anchormen 9-1 and 11-0.

NEXT:

Saint Joseph's faces off against Salve Regina University tomorrow at Chain of Lakes Stadium. First pitch is slated for 9:00 AM.
