BOSTON, MA - St. Joe's and Emerson college shared the #3 spot in the conference standings coming into this afternoon's game as both teams held a 7-3 GNAC record. JR Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) led the Monks with 20 points in the loss. Emerson takes sole possession of third place in the conference with the 80-70 victory over the Monks and now owns an 8-3 GNAC, 15-3 overall record . St. Joe's falls to 4th place with a 7-4 GNAC record and is 9-9 overall on the season.

Emerson got 20 points from both Will Dawkins (Sr., Springfield, Mass.) and Jeremy Shannon (So., Lowell, Mass.) in a battle for third place in the GNAC standings.

Following a see-saw first 12 minutes that saw five ties and seven lead changes, Emerson took the lead for good on a Bryan Rouse (So., East Greenwich, R.I.) layup. Emerson gradually increased the lead throughout the remainder of the half, peaking at 42-30 with just over a minute left. A free throw shot by Elbie Murphy and a jumper by Chris Davis (New York, N.Y.) made the halftime score 42-33.

Three times in the first seven minutes of the second half St. Joe's cut the lead to five points, but a three point shot by Dawkins triggered a 19-6 run for the Lions to give Emerson a 69-51 lead with 5:53 remaining. The margin reached 19 points following a traditional three point play by Shannon with 2:10 left, and St. Joseph's scored 11 of the game's final 13 points for the final margin.

In addition to Dawkins and Shannon who had a double-double with 13 rebounds, Jon Showers (Fr., York, Pa.) with 11 and Joe Boylan (Sr., Royal Oak, Mich.) with 10 were also in double figures for the Lions.

Murphy tallied 20 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals for St. Joe's, while Mitch Ouellet (Jr., Fort Kent, Maine) had 13, and Davis scored a dozen. JR Alberto Rue (Jamaica Plain, MA) added came off the bench to sink 2 of 3 three-point attempts and scored 8 points.

Emerson next plays Tuesday, February 5 at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. at 7:00pm. St. Joe's plays Suffolk at home Monday at 7:30pm.
