STANDISH, ME - The Saint Joseph's College Men's
Basketball team hosted in-state rival Husson College on Wednesday
night and lost, 81-68. The Monks were led offensively by JR
Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, NY) who scored a season
high 20 points and grabbed 9 boards in the game. The Eagles were
paced by SR Sheraud Lee (Bridgeport, CT) with 17 points. With the
game in the books the Monks are now 1-4 on the year. Husson College
improves to 3-1 overall.
The game was a back and forth affair in the early going as neither
team held a lead of more than 3 points until Husson's Sheraud Lee
sank two free throws and a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions to
extend the Eagles' lead to five, 16-11, ten minutes into the first
half. FY Chris Davis (New York, NY) cut Husson's
lead back down 2 points when he drained a 3-pointer with 7 minutes
remaining in the half.
From this point in the game both teams would endure hot and cold
streaks, scoring points in bunches when hot and not being able to
stop the opponent defensively when cold.
The Monks gained the lead, 24-22, three minutes later when
Elbie Murphy scored on a put-back off his own
missed shot to cap an 8-4 SJC run. The Eagles countered the Monks
run with one of their own, outscoring the St. Joe's men 12-2 in the
final 3:55 of the first half, thus taking a 34-26 lead into
halftime.
St. Joe's fought back to within one point of the Eagles when FY
Eric Friend (Portland, ME) hit a clutch 3-pointer
eight minutes into the second half to make the score 45-44, Husson.
The Eagles battled back with another impressive run, outscoring the
Monks by a 13-3 margin in a four minute span and extending their
lead to 58-47 with 8 minutes left to play.
SJC would come within striking distance again when SO
Rashon Jones (Bridgeport, CT) hit a jumper to make
the score 65-62 Husson with 3:15 remaining. This is as close as the
Monks would come, however, as the Eagles pulled away with yet
another run, outscoring St. Joe's 16-6 in the final three minutes
of the contest.
Husson shot 21-25 from the charity stripe while the Monks went only
11 for 21 on their free throw attempts. St. Joe's made 3 of 11
three-point attempts, Husson connected on 10 of 31 three-point
bids. Both teams shot just over 41% from the floor.
All five Eagles starters reached double digits in point totals as
Sheraud Lee (17 pts), Brock Bradford (16 pts), Matt McKenzie (11
pts), Blaine Meehan (11 pts) and Scott Kissinger (10 pts) all
contributed in the Husson victory. Six different Eagles players
made 3-pointers in the game.
For St. Joe's, SO Ray Eatmon (Huntington, NY)
grabbed 9 boards and scored 16 points and FY Chris
Davis (New York, NY) scored 9 points and added 5 rebounds
in the game. SO Rashon Jones (Bridgeport, CT)
provided a spark off the bench, shooting 3-5 from the floor for 7
points.
Saint Joseph's College will host GNAC foe Daniel Webster on
Saturday, 12/8 @ 3:00 PM.
