STANDISH, ME - SJC men's basketball senior Zach O'Brien (Schenectady, N.Y.) has claimed Maine Men's Basketball Coaches and Writers Association (MMBCWA) Weekly Honor Roll mention for his play in three games last week.
O'Brien led the Monks to a 2-1 week and averaged 20.0 points, 2.7 boards and 2.0 assists over the three conference contests. The senior captain netted 19 points off a 7-13 shooting effort in a win over Mount Ida on Monday and capped the week with a career-high 35 points in a triumph over JWU on Saturday. O'Brien shot 11-19 from the field, including a 4-7 performance from downtown, and 9-9 from the FT line in the rematch of the 2011 GNAC Championship game.
Through 15 contests O'Brien leads the 11-4 Monks in scoring (17.9 PPG), steals (20), free throws made (57) and minutes played (509). He also ranks second on the team in rebounding (4.4 RPG) and assists (2.3 APG).
St. Joe's falls to third in the MMBCWA Weekly Poll behind Bates College (31 pts) and Bowdoin College (27). With 26 points, the Monks currently sit ahead of Maine-Farmington (14) and Thomas College (4). Southern Maine and Husson both received votes as well.
Saint Joseph's will host Mount Ida College in a conference matchup on Thursday night at 6:00 PM.
