STANDISH, ME – #2 Saint Joseph's College (16-9, 15-3 GNAC) is set to host #7 Suffolk University (9-16, 6-12 GNAC) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinal at 7:30 PM on Tuesday at the Harold Alfond Center.
The last time we met:
The Monks defeated the Rams in both meetings between the conference counterparts this season, including a 70-63 win at the Alfond Center 10 days ago.
Three players reached double-digits for Saint Joseph's that Saturday afternoon, as Nicholas Jobin (Westbrook, Maine) netted 20 with a game-high nine rebounds, Steve Simonds (Steep Falls, Maine) added 18 with five caroms and Matthew Medeiros (Westport, Mass.) contributed 12 points in the triumph.
For Suffolk, junior guard Sam Nwadike (Houston, Texas) led all scorers with 21 points while Caleb Unni (Winchester, Mass.) and Curtis Casella (Saugus, Mass.) scored nine points apiece in the losing bid.
What have you done lately?
Saint Joseph's saw a nine-game win streak come to a close with a 77-68 loss at Lasell College on Saturday afternoon. The string of victories counts as the program's longest since the 1998-99 team rattled off 23-consecutive wins.
The Rams enter tournament play having lost four straight and six of their last seven. Suffolk's only victories this month have come against Mount Ida College, as the Rams topped the Mustangs 79-57 on February 1st and defeated them again, 81-69, 10 days later.
Historically speaking:
Including the two wins this season, Saint Joseph's is 11-2 all-time versus Suffolk University, but the Rams managed to tip the Monks by a 77-68 score last winter, a contest that was played on December 1st, 2012 in Boston.
Who to watch:
The top three-point shooting team in the GNAC with a 38.4% clip, Saint Joseph's relies plenty on success from beyond the arc and features a bevy of capable shooters. Four players – Medeiros, Simonds, Zach Blodgett (Glenburn, Maine) and Craig Luschenat (Boston, Mass.) have all made at least 17 trifectas this season and each has the ability to take control of a game when hot.
Medeiros is enjoying his finest season, averaging a career-best 18.5 points along with 3.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game as a senior. A 2013 First Team All-GNAC selection and back-to-back Maine Co-Player of the Week, the senior sharpshooter enters tonight's contest just three treys away from breaking the Monks' single-season record (97).
Jobin, a 2013 Third Team All-GNAC honoree, is also in the midst of a career-best season. The senior post player, who along with Medeiros eclipsed the 1,000-point mark earlier this winter, enters tonight's contest averaging 17.5 points and a team-high 8.1 rebounds per tilt.
Simonds rounds out the group of top scorers, averaging 12.3 points per game while shooting 37.5% (63-168) from downtown.
Also the top defensive team in the conference, allowing just 66.7 points per contest, Saint Joseph's boasts a roster full of outstanding defenders, including senior James Philbrook (Auburn, Maine), junior Jordan Tripp (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore Jerome Diggs (Washington, D.C.).
Suffolk features a quartet of double-digit scorers, including first-year player Sam Nwadike, who averages 17.4 points while shooting 43.1% (150-348) from the field and 66.9% (109-163) from the FT line. Unni contributes 10.8 PPG and ranks as the team-leader with 39 three-pointers made and Matt Powers (Westwood, Mass.) 10.7 PPG for the visitors.
Freshman Frantz Pinard (Arlington, Mass.), a three-time GNAC Rookie of the Week honoree, is one of the top young players in the conference and adds 10.6 PPG with a team-best 5.4 RPG average.
Speaking of young players, the Rams feature one of the most youthful rosters in the GNAC with no seniors, three juniors, eight sophomores and four freshmen on the team this season.
