SJC Men Fall to Emmanuel, 58-37

STANDISH, Maine – Emmanuel College (1-3, 1-0 GNAC) toppled Saint Joseph's College (3-3, 0-1 GNAC), 58-37, in what was the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season-opener for both teams at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

THE LEAD

The Monks owned a 15-9 lead after freshman Marc Corey (Londonderry, N.H.) drained a three-pointer off a Darian Berry (Rochester, N.H.) pass eight minutes in, but the Saints managed to outscore Saint Joseph's by a 19-8 margin over the remainder of the first half en route to securing a 28-23 cushion going into intermission.

St. Joe's failed to find the flow in the second stanza as Emmanuel opened frame with a 16-3 run, which was capped by a Kyle Davis (Groveland, Mass.) layup to make it a 44-26 game with 12:43 remaining.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S

  • Berry was 3-4 from the floor and led the Monks with seven points
  • Sophomore Quinn Richardson-Newton (Saco, Maine) added six points and five rebounds

LEADERS – EMMANUEL

  • Senior forward John Clay (Westport, Mass.) came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points off a 7-10 shooting effort and added seven boards
  • Davis notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds
  • Sophomore guard Colin Cordero (Bolton, Conn.) posted nine points, five caroms and four assists
  • Junior guard Kyle Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) added five points, seven boards and seven assists

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's shot 31.8% (14-44) from the floor, 38.5% (5-13) from beyond the arc and 57.1% (4-7) from the free throw line in the loss. Emmanuel shot 37.9% (22-58) from the field, 43.8% (7-16) from three-point distance and 50% (7-14) from the charity stripe on the evening.

The Saints held advantages in rebounds (39-31), assists (17-12), steals (12-3), turnovers (10-19), points off turnovers (21-5), second chance points (12-4), points in the paint (24-14) and bench points (21-14).

NOTEWORTHY

In tonight's loss, the Monks registered the second-fewest points scored in a game in program history as well as the fewest field goals made (14) since the 2003-04 season…Saint Joseph's scored just 14 points in the second half – the second-fewest produced in a half in team history…St. Joe's is now 153-13 all-time when allowing 60 or fewer points with just six losses in such scenarios since the turn of the century.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 15-3 in the history of the series with Emmanuel College, a team the Monks had defeated in six-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2012-13 campaign.
