Prairie Wolves Race Past Monks, 103-90

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska Wesleyan University (4-1) defeated Saint Joseph's College (2-5), 103-90, in a Snyder Classic Tournament matchup on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Prairie Wolves essentially won the game in the first half, as the tourney hosts posted a blistering 57.9% (22-38) shooting effort from the floor in the opening frame and headed into intermission with a 58-37 advantage. Nebraska Wesleyan held a game-high 26-point lead (56-30) after Jared Townsley hit a three-pointer with 2:17 before the break.

The Monks played much better in the second half – and 'won' the latter frame by a 53-45 margin - to cut their deficit to 10 points (89-79) with 3:19 remaining, but the Prairie Wolves went 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the closing two minutes to keep the visitors at bay.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Nebraska Wesleyan scored 29 points off 22 SJC turnovers and held a 56-42 lead in points in the paint…Both teams made over half of their shots from the field, as the Prairie Wolves shot 53.6% (37-69) and the Monks countered with a 50.8% (32-63) rate from the floor.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Freshman guard Remijo Wani (Portland, Maine) scored 26 points on a 10-for-13 shooting effort with three boards and three assists – his point total in tonight's setback is the most by an SJC freshman since Leroy Gore scored 26 against SUNY-Purchase on December 8th, 2000
  • Sophomore forward Wani Donato (Portland, Maine) added 20 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and two assists
  • Junior guard Julian Llopiz (Boston, Mass.) contributed 15 points and three assists
  • Sophomore guard John Paul Frazier (York, Maine) chipped in with 12 points and four rebounds
  • Graduate forward Ashtyn Abbott (Farmingdale, Maine) scored 10 points with three caroms, three steals, and a pair of assists

LEADERS – NEBRASKA WESLEYAN:

  • Junior guard Carter Glenn (Lincoln, Neb.) scored a game-high 30 points with six assists and five rebounds
  • Junior guard Peter Lash (Charlotte, N.C.) tallied 23 points, seven boards, and four assists
  • Senior forward Landon Torneten (Council Bluffs, Iowa) added 10 points, nine caroms, two assists and a pair of steals
  • Junior forward Jack Groeteke (Johnston, Iowa) contributed 10 points – including eight off dunks – with three rebounds, , two assists, and two steals

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Tonight's matchup was the first-ever between Saint Joseph's and Nebraska Wesleyan University.
