Men Predicted to Finish First, Women Fourth at GNAC Championships

WINTHROP, Mass. –
 Following a vote amongst the league's five head coaches, the Saint Joseph's College of Maine men and Colby-Sawyer College women have been chosen as the favorites for this Sunday's 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Indoor Track & Field Championship, which will take place at the Boston University Track & Tennis Center
 
Either team title would mark the first in program history for the Monks men or Chargers women, as 2023 marks the fourth-ever indoor championship meet hosted by the GNAC. 
 
In the men's poll, SJC received three first-place votes and 23 points in the poll, ahead of Colby-Sawyer, which collecetd a pair of first-place votes and 21 points as runner-up. Regis College (15 points), Lasell University (9) and Emmanuel College (7) rounded out the rankings. 
 
Meanwhile the CSC women garnered two first-place votes en route to 22 points overall in the coaches' voting, with Regis finished in the second slot with two first-place nods and 20 points. Emmanuel earned one first-place tally for 16 points, ahead of Saint Joseph's (10) and Lasell (7). 
 
Indoor meet action gets underway from the BU Track & Tennis Center at 11:00 AM with field events and the women's then men's 5000 meters. For the complete event schedule, please click HERE.
 
Located at 1000 Ashford Street, the 83,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art BU Track & Tennis Center opened in 2002 and has 1,500 fixed seats for spectators (currently no COVID restrictions). It is designed to accommodate national competitions, athletic events, a variety of health and fitness activities and University functions. The TTC is considered by many to be the fastest indoor track in the world and the number of records set on it back up that claim.  

Facility features include:
  • 200 meter fixed bank oval track
  • Tuned interface between structure and deck that provides greater rebound
  • Rekortan surface -- one of the finest track surface materials available
  • Six lanes with staggered waterfall starts to accommodate additional runners for longer distances
  • 18.5 degree banking designed so that runners are swept into the bank quickly to maintain rhythm through the turns
  • Single lane flat warm-up loop around the outside perimeter of oval with the same tuned interface between structure and deck
  • Eight 60-meter spring/hurdle lanes with Martin Versaturf 360 surface material
  • Long/triple jump runway with tuned interface structure with Rekortan surface
  • High jump can be accommodated anywhere on the 27,700 square foot infield
  • Specially designed throwing cage and ring for the shot put and hammer throw
  • Pole vault runway and plant box
