Standish, ME - The Saint Joseph's College Monks charged onto the
field, energized by a chance to play baseball on a warm (in the sun
anyway) spring day in Maine and bulldozed the Castleton State
Spartans, sweeping their home opener 6-0 and 5-3.
In the first game, St. Joe's had a 5-0 streak in the very first
inning, leading to their ultimate 6-0 victory over the Spartans.
Freshman lefty Charlie Furbush
(South Portland, Me.) led the Monks with five shutout innings and
three strikeouts. Sophomore Mark
Clapp (Blue Hill, Me.) went three-for-three with a
double, two singles and a walk.
Sophomore Philip Puleo (Utica, N.Y.) and junior Adam Massey (Ponte
Vedra Beach, Fl.) each had a double for the Spartans in game 1.
The Monks were on a roll, and wrapped up the doubleheader with a
5-3 victory in game 2. Senior Greg
Kimball (Lebanon, Me.) went six innings with no
earned runs and four strikeouts. Freshman Andrew
Dvilinsky (Portland, Me.), led the offense with a
two-run double and an RBI single.
Freshman Tom Cummings (Athol, Mass.) pitched six innings, taking
the loss for the visitors; junior Mark Alger (New London, Ct.) had
a home run.
The Monks will have another go-round with Castleton State tomorrow,
4/7, at Mahaney Diamond, with the first pitch going out at 2 PM.
