Milton, Mass. - Junior outfielder Chris Mearn (Milton, Mass.)
went 4-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead seventh-seeded Babson
College past second-seeded Saint Joseph's, 10-6, in ECAC Division
III New England Baseball Tournament first-round action Friday.
The Monks (32-10) got single runs in the first three innings off
Beavers' starter Jim Burke (Milton, Mass.) to take a 3-0 lead, but
the Beavers (21-18) scored a total of eight runs over the next four
innings off St. Joe's starter Charlie
Furbush (South Portland, Me.) to clinch the
victory.
In addition to Mearn's offensive production, Babson got a four-RBI
performance from sophomore third baseman Matt Chatterton (Fall
River, Mass.), and a home run and three runs knocked in by junior
catcher Ted Dziuba (Wayne, N.J.).
Burke held on for the win, going 5 1/3 innings to improve his
record to 2-3. Freshman closer Robbie Leer (Edina, Minn.) threw the
final 1 2/3 innings to earn his fourth save. Furbush took his first
and only loss of the season, dropping his record to 7-1.
Senior Derek McIntosh (Auburn,
Me.), sophomore Mark Clapp (Blue
Hill, Me.) and freshman Charlie
Furbush (S.Portland, Me.) all had two hits apiece
for the Monks.
Babson advances to the semifinal round and will take on
sixth-seeded Keene State College at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21
st at Curry College. The winner of that contest will travel
immediately to Bridgewater State to play in the Championship Game
against either Endicott College or Brandeis University.
