STANDISH, ME - The Great Northeast Athletic
Conference has released the 2009 All-Conference Baseball honors,
and Saint Joseph's College (25-10, 13-1 GNAC), the top seed in the
GNAC Tournament, is well-represented.
In all, eight St. Joe's players have been voted by conference
coaches to either the first or second team. Head Coach Will
Sanborn '86 has been named GNAC Coach of the Year and
junior standout Pat Moran
(Winterport, ME) has received both Player and Pitcher of the Year
accolades.
Moran, Ben Grant-Roy '10
(Biddeford, ME), Michael Burdin
'10 (Gardiner, ME), Wade Oliver
'09 (Owls Head, ME) and Chris
Campbell '11 (Rochester, NH) have all been
recognized as First Team All-Conference players.
Eric LaBatte '11 (Rochester, NH)
and Ian Lee '11 (Hampden, ME)
were voted to the Second Team and Stephan
Gorsun '09 (South Berwick, ME) is the club's
All-Sportsmanship Team selection.
For Sanborn, the Coach of the Year
honor is the third of his career. He has guided the Monks to nine
conference titles and seven trips to the regional tournament in his
17 seasons as the Monks' clipboard carrier and ranks as the
winningest skipper in St. Joe's baseball history with a 430-253-6
(.630) record. Saint Joseph's is in pursuit of the team's fifth
consecutive tournament championship and, if achieved, their fourth
straight appearance in the NCAA DIII New England Regional
tourney.
Moran is in the midst of one of the finest seasons
ever posted by a Monks' two-way player. The University of Maine
transfer is 6-0 on the mound with a 2.25 earned run average and
leads the GNAC with 62 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched. The tall
righthander also leads the conference in opponent's batting average
(.189) and his 0.69 walks per nine innings is the fifth-best ratio
in all of NCAA DIII Baseball. As a hitter, Moran
leads the league in home runs (8) and slugging percentage (.797)
and ranks third in the conference with a .405 batting average and
32 runs batted in.
Moran also garnered First Team All-Conference
honors as a pitcher and a designated hitter.
Grant-Roy, named to the First Team for the second
time, leads the GNAC with 15 doubles and ranks second in runs
scored with 41. The junior first baseman, a gold glove caliber
defender, is hitting .378 with 26 RBI as the Monks' cleanup hitter.
Burdin's first All-Conference
nomination is well-deserved, as the junior infielder has batted
.404 with 30 runs, 10 doubles, four home runs and 29 RBI in 33
games during his breakout campaign. His .687 slugging percentage
ranks second on the team and third in the GNAC. The wily veteran
posted the second cycle in program history when he recorded a
single, double, triple and home run against Rivier College on April
4th.
With the First Team nomination, Oliver has
received All-Conference recognition in each of his four seasons
while donning the Royal Blue. The senior captain has solidified the
center field position this season and carries a .284 average with
30 runs, 27 RBI and 12 doubles into the GNAC Tournament.
Having logged time at second, left field, shortstop and third base,
Campbell is a logical choice for the utility spot
on the First Team All-Conference list. The sophomore standout has
started 31 games for the Monks this season and is currently hitting
.384 with 28 runs and 22 RBI. Campbell has served
as an excellent catalyst for a Monks offensive scoring machine that
leads the league in scoring by 63 runs. The postseason accolade is
Campbell's first.
LaBatte receives his first All-Conference
nomination after logging valuable time in the middle of the SJC
batting order this season. The second-year starter and #5 hitter is
currently hitting .350 with 31 runs, 30 RBI, 10 doubles and five
long balls, the second most in the conference.
Lee, the leading hitter in the GNAC with a .471 batting
average, has been named to the Second Team for the second
consecutive season. The 2008 GNAC Rookie of the Year leads the
league in hits (58) and total bases (75) and ranks second in RBI
(41) and doubles (12).
Gorsun, one of the team's captains as a senior,
was selected to represent Saint Joseph's on the GNAC
All-Sportsmanship Team. The fourth-year outfielder has served as
the Monks' top pinch runner and defensive replacement in the
outfield during his career and fits the true definition of the term
team-player. Gorsun has made the most of his
playing time this season, with a .421 (8-19) average, 12 runs, 10
RBI and three stolen bases in 25 games.
